The Decemberists are playing a sold-out show at Fox Theatre in Oakland tonight, which we hear is lovely, and SFist commenter periqueblend (currently Top SFist User #9) posed the question on Twitter regarding where to get some good grub near there. He's gotten some good replies so far, including FLORA, Luka's Taproom, Franklin Square Wine Bar, Picán, and an obligatory drink at Van Kleef. Any readers have any more suggestions? Also, the Fox has a good list of nearby restaurants on their site. We figured this might be helpful for others venturing across the bay to the show.

If you're on a budget, you could try the recently opened Bacheeso's on Grand right across from the lake. Otherwise you can't go wrong with Flora, and it's proximity to the Fox can't be beat. Def grab a greyhound at Cafe Van Kleef.
BTW I'm jealous as I've heard the Decemberists put on a great show. Alas, I'll be working AND I'm sick so there's no way. :(
for the vegan eaters, definitely check out golden lotus just a few blocks away.

and the van kleef is spot on for the best place to get a drink.
Pacific Coast Brewery is great, but it's a little walk from the Fox.
These suggestions are great, and I'm glad that my predicament might be helpful to others...
There's a great sushi/Japanese BBQ place across the street from Luka's. Midrange pricing and great cocktails (I had what I think was a lychee martini?).
Everette and Jones isn't really walking distance, as it's down near the Jack London water front. Am I the only person in the Bay Area who wasn't very impressed with it?
Ave Restaurant and Lounge, liked it much more than Luka's

Just back from the Decemberists at the Fox Theater, which is indeed quite lovely. Plenty of space, bars, nice and clean and new yet still has that vintage flavor (just don't pay too close attention to the myriad security cameras in the ceiling). Acoustics were great, no complaints - and the Decemberists put on a fantastic performance...
Prior to the show, we dined at Flora - our 5:45 reservation ensured a leisurely meal. Staff was completely on the ball, and the food... gimme more, please. I ordered the sweet potato soup as a starter, and the steamed Halibut as my entree, my wife ordered a salad (with this impossibly good peppery dressing) and the tuna dish. Dessert gave me a mouthgasm - the caramel pudding with sea salt, creme and a pine nut and rosemary cookie.
It was our first time at Flora, the Fox, and hearing the Decemberists live.. We'll be back for all of the above...
A very yelplike review. Four stars.
i agree about the Fox. Quick bathroom lines and beer lines. Pretty theater.
the sound was great last night. that little hipster chick in the silver leggings killed it last night. she sounded like Beth Ditto.
I went to Franklin Square. It was good - would recommend, affordable and good wines, good food.
I wonder about 2220, if that's any good. has a small plates menu...
Another good place is the Vietnamese restaurant (I'm blanking on the name at the moment) two blocks east on 17th. Great food there and quick service when you're catching a show.
I had this problem on Sunday for the Ben Folds show.
We gave up and took BART to Rockridge where there are actual restaurants that are open on a Sunday and tons of them. All the stuff that's open near the Fox is overpriced for the quality you get.
Also the Fox kinda sucks too. Anyone else had a problem with really muddy sound so you can't hear any of the high end and it's all just bass? I know that's great for some shows, but I expect a little "more" out of a multimillion dollar rennovation to a place than the same sound system they put in a club.
Pho 84, a Vietnamese restaurant on 17th and Webster is my personal favorite. Their eggplant in plum sauce should be called "Le Petit Mort" as it's the closest to a foodgasm that I've ever experienced.
Cocina Poblana in Jack London Square has always proven to give a good restaurant experience...their food is fresh, flavorful and actually spicy (a combination that is hard to find these days) and the service is exceedingly welcoming without being fake. Good for big crowds or off hours when everything else is closed.
There is also a myriad of asian restaurants around. Walked into one the other day that had homemade chow mein noodles that hit the spot...biggest cockroach I've ever seen chillin' in the bathroom urinal though.
New World Vegetarian on 8th and Broadway used to be good...now they are a bit overpriced and the original cooking staff looks to have been replaced by the dishwashers. No love.
Battambang (broadway at 9th) is super yum, lots of veg options too.
Pho 84 at 17th and Webster is the place I was thinking of. Thanks to nanomonkey for jogging my memory -- and I would also recommend the eggplant there. It totally rocks!
