Like many of its visitors, we visit to the Main Library only to shower in the sink. Others, however, still use the place to check out books. But some fear returning because of overdue library books and punitive costs. Well, fear no more, book lovers. The SF Public Library started a two-week amnesty period this week, where you can return your book and other library material without penalty or fine to restore your borrowing privileges. You can return your items to any SF library starting today up until May 16. Read more about it at sfpl.org/fineamnesty. The last time the SF Public Library had an amnesty program was way back in 2001, which saw more than 5,000 items returned. Oh yeah, items can only be returned if they are in good condition.

Dammit, and I paid my fines yesterday!
yay! now i can use the library again!
"we visit to the Main Library only to shower in the sink"
golden.
The hooker bath is a long and storied tradition.
This is totally a trick.
Hah, just the other day I was lamenting missing the last one. "The Five Minute Interview" begone, you will no longer darken my bookcase ten years on!
This is exciting... I get sad when I want to get a book or CD that is listed as 'missing'. Curious to see what ends up getting returned... And who gets fined for returning things that are destroyed or unusable. I wonder if they will have a report about that after the program ends. Hmmm...
They shoudl really send out notices beforehand.
Doesn't everyone just steal books from house parties?
Ramona is The Shit.
Agreed, doublegin!! Ramona Quimby Age 8 was one of my favorite books growing up. And this book cover could not be more adorable.
I actually have a book back at my parents place from the SF Library that I checked out in 2001 and left sitting in a pile. I buy so many books that I honestly thought it was mine. I stopped going to the main SF library when the homeless and crazies took it over.
Yeah, I got an e-mail about this maybe a day after I returned a book that I was keeping out a bit past due (I checked, there were available copies out there) because I'd passed my final renewal. It's not a ton of fines, but it's still rather annoying that if I'd only held onto it a bit longer I would have had exactly what I'd wanted (another week to finish the book up which the library refused to give me).
The biggest problem is that the library rarely stocks much in the way of books outside of the main branch. Most of the branches are small with incredibly mediocre collections that are rivaled by the private libraries of most people I know. They basically seem to function mainly as a place to pick up the books that I have to request online.
As opposed to shutting down the Park branch for a year and spending $1 million on various "improvements" it's a shame they can't just use that money to actually buy books and places to store them.
