It may not be the best moment to be celebrating the blind indulgence of American consumer (and drug) culture, but fashion designer Ken Courtney of Ju$t Another Rich Kid is nonetheless forging ahead with an ironic tribute to everyone who enjoys the booger sugar: a limited edition set of silver and gold coke spoons crafted by five well known designers. The set is a kind of art object titled "He Loves Me, He Loves Me Not." and each spoon in the set was designed by a different designer: Courtney himself, Terence Koh, Various Projects, Daniel Jackson and SF's own Nice Collective. Courtney's original spoon, inspired by a 1970s McDonald's coffee stirrer that was banned, allegedly, because of its popularity for use in snorting cocaine - link NSFW - was recently purchased by the SFMoMA for their design collection. It was part of a series called "Indulgences" which included a $5,000 pair of gold-dipped high-top Nikes.
There's a launch party for the project at Harputs Market (1527 Fillmore) tonight on May 7 (sorry, jumped the gun there...), 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., with an after-party at Triple Crown (1760 Market) at 10 p.m. We are guessing the bathroom lines at each venue will be long.

i can't believe Brock didn't write this.
Yeah, coke is oh-so-high-fash until you actually hang out with people on it (when you're, uh, not). I'm no Nancy Reagan...but isn't this dionysian trend really, really dated? Like reading Howl and being shocked, except without the, you know, artistic value and whatnot.
Now that's there's a recession on aren't we allowed to toss the people who make these things into a nearby woodchipper in the hopes that they'll serve a useful purpose as mulch?
Oh my, how original.
The Cokespoon series, and many other design/art objects, can still be purchased at the SF-based Citizen Citizen.

I wake up and read sfist every day, I am very disappointed today reading this garbage you call culture-watch. I am a fourth generation native san franciscan and I love what your blog covers, but giving free publicity to some self-righteous hipster asshole calling drug paraphernalia art is ridiculous. Some guy making spoons for coke and calling them art is insane, its profiting off a sad addiction in our youth and in this city. Just drink people....just drink.
