Bring on the Swine Flu Miracle Cure Spam

swine-neverforget.jpg There has just been a confirmed case of swine flu in San Francisco -- yikes!

Our Gmail account efficiently filters out all undesirable emails, but we hear there's been an onslaught of swine flu "miracle cure" email scams seeking to victimize Grandma's AOL account.

We know SFist readers are way too shrewd to fall for this spam nonsense, but it's worth remembering that there currently is no swine flu vaccine in existence. Prescription medications Tamiflu (oseltamivir) and Relenza (zanamivir) can reduce the severity of the flu, but they have pretty severe side effects (headaches, nausea, and vomiting) and can potentially reduce drug resistance to the flu. Therefore, taking one of the medications is recommended only if you know you've been in contact with someone who has the swine flu.

For all of us otherwise healthy folks, doctors recommend the following lifelong remedies for staying healthy and thereby boosting our resistance to illness: Sleep, Vitamin D, quitting smoking, and meditation. UV lights and humidifiers are also proven to kill the flu virus, but they also come with certain hazards. UV lights are expensive and can burn your skin, and humidifiers often create mold issues.

Probably not swine flu, but my girlfriend and I both became sick with fluish symptoms (headache, nausea, general discomfort) around Monday. Her doctor told her it wasn't swine flu, but it's still crazily coincidental. Almost as coincidental as her having a doctor's appointment already scheduled for the day she just happened to become ill.

now is a good time to go vegetarian.

I loved the looks I got buying pork at the store today. I wanted to be a real asshole and wave the package at their horrified faces, but I might've dropped my latte.

I feel bad for the taquerias in town (and around Cali)that might be having a serious dip in their business right now. I fear nobody is ordering wonderful al pastor burritos. And al pastor super nachos. And chorizo anything.

Of course, you don't get the swine flu from eating pigs and pig products. You get it from other people! And you don't have to eat them, either, to get it!

So rather than being a "good time to go vegetarian," I think now would be a good time to avoid people. Especially unsanitary ones, who smoke and don't have UV lights and never sleep because they're tweaking and have lowered immune systems.

I took the "miracle cure" pills and my penis got bigger. Must have been a mix-up in the shipping department.

If it's true UV lights kill Swine Flu then I guess I'm about to protect my home. FYI Calutech.com is 40% off UV lights for those looking for UV lights. They're usually pretty expensive, don't know if the sale ends soon, doesn't really say anything about it.
