SFist Reviews: Vivian Girls @ the Independent

by Moses Namkung

A couple minutes into the Vivian Girls' set at the Independent on Friday, your friendly SFist correspondent realized that he wasn't really listening to the music. Cassie Ramone kept leaning over, strumming her Squier, blond mane hanging straight down, and then she'd stand up and swing her hair across her face so that a few groups of locks partly covered it. Dreadfully attractive hair toss. But is this effect what the Vivian Girls were really going for? Distractingly hot?

See any Brooklyn Vegan post's comment section on them, i.e. "Everyone I know under 25 thinks they're full of shit, whereas every (dude) I know older than 25 seems to really adore them in this bizare [sic] fusion of Lolita-ish physical lust and high school indie nostalgia." Er. Ok, so cute indie female musicians have always kind of attracted followings for, well, being cute... in addition to them having whatever talent they might (or might not) have.

We gave The Vivian Girls a thumbs up before we saw them, though we certainly didn't feel as positively euphoric about it as the good folks at cokemachineglow, who, in their review, show the effects of drinking way too much Kool-Aid:

I believe in the Vivian Girls. In every gorgeous harmony that coats bitterness, in every ambition subjugated to truncated song structure and muffled production, in every bouncy beat beneath a baleful drawl somehow made of equally bouncy elements.

Oy, keep it in your pants.

And after seeing them? Yeah, they're hot. Cassie drinks hard alcohol on stage ("What is this? It's Jameson. It's disgusting.")! They've got tats on their arms! Droooool. Ok, shallow. Overhyped? Not talented enough? Too derivative? Maybe, but meh, so what. Look past all that, and their set on Friday (which wasn't all that much longer than their 22 minute album) exceeded all aural expectations, which, granted, were pegged none too high.

Pretty, uh, thorough review here.

I'm afraid I just can't support a band that thinks Jameson is disgusting...

Whatever you do, do not read the Brooklyn Vegan thread. It does nobody any good.
