In their meeting yesterday, BART directors said they'd probably be raising fares by at least 6% on July 1, rather than wait until a scheduled increase next January. The increase will take the form of either a) an increase in the minimum fare, which is currently $1.50 b) a surcharge on all fares or c) a $4 surcharge on all fares to SFO bringing those trips up to the max fare of $9.35 -- this last proposal is favored by San Francisco director James Fang. None of these proposals has been brought to a vote, and a public hearing is likely to take place on or before May 28. We guess the airport thing would be our choice, because we don't go there much, and $1.60 minimum fare is just annoying.
