Already Imprisoned Man Charged in Chandra Levy Murder Case

chandra-levy-murder.jpg Remember Chandra Levy? She was the intern who went missing in 2001 and was later found dead in Rock Creek Park in D.C. and the prime suspect, for a while, was California Congressman Gary Condit with whom she was having an affair? If you've thought about it at all since, you might have figured that September 11th came along and distracted everyone and that Condit fell under the radar and probably got away with murder.

Well, as it turns out, the Salvadorean immigrant now being charged in the case, Ingmar Guandique, is not just a patsy -- he is already serving a sentence for assaulting another woman in the same park, and the police actually had a lead about him back in 2001 that they ignored because of the media storm and speculation surrounding Gary Condit. We, ourselves, when we heard the crime was being pinned on this immigrant a full eight years later, we figured Condit had finally completed his long game of string-pulling and backroom deals. But no -- sometimes life isn't like a Grisham novel and the suspicious looking, adulterous Congressman might actually be innocent.

See this handy timeline at the Washington Post for more about the investigation.
