Sunday Streets Starts This Sunday

sundaystreets.jpg This Sunday will kick off six Sundays of car-free Sunday Streets, which will take place in various parts of the city. This Sunday's route will extend along the waterfront from South Beach Park to Aquatic Park, and the event goes from 9 a.m to 1 p.m. There were two successful Sunday Streets last year, which drew over 15,000 people each weekend.

Participants will engage in activities such as dancing, yoga, skating, biking, walking, hula hooping, recreational sports, piano-playing on a trike, and people watching.

Sunday Streets is also looking for volunteers.

Here are the next Sunday Streets events for 2009:

  • Sunday, May 10: Waterfront Route in the Southeast Sector, highlighting the San Francisco Bay Trail, which is celebrating its 20th Anniversary in May. From AT&T Park to the Bayview Opera House, along the Bay.

  • Sunday, June 7: New route for 2009 through the Mission, engaging new neighborhoods in the Sunday Streets movement.

  • Sunday, July 19: New route for 2009 through the Mission, engaging new neighborhoods in the Sunday Streets movement.

  • Sunday, August 9: Great Highway Route. Connecting Golden Gate Park to the San Francisco Zoo, along Ocean Beach.

  • Sunday, Sept 6: Great Highway Route. Connecting Golden Gate Park to the San Francisco Zoo, along Ocean Beach.

I don't get the point of closing streets that are already adjacent to plenty of space for other activities. I mean the Embarcadero already has plenty of space to run, hula-hoop, and whatever else. Same for the Great Highway.

Would be way more interesting to close down a long stretch of a street/area not normally used for this sort of activity.

Close California St or something.

Which is why the idea of a Mission route is much more interesting. Anyone know if they've announced yet which street(s) they'll close?

Agreed, possible suggestions:

Irving street 4th-19th (Screw the N-Judah!)

Valencia 14th-24th

Clement 2nd-Park Presidio/Park Presidio - 27th

They should close down every street in the city every weekend. That way the Bridge and Tunnelers, lost tourists, 183 year-old women, Zip-Car drivers and all the other retards who only drive on weekends cannot kill me with their incompetence behind the wheel.

Ok so I'm not going to have to worry about getting hit by a car while I'm on my bicycle at these things. I'll just have to keep my eyes out for those pedestrians to busy texting to watch where they are going.

So how is bicyclists looking out for pedestrians different than drivers looking out for bicyclists?

(checks SF Critical Mass handbook)

(finds Section on why bikes are allowed on sidewalks when there's a bike line designated on the same city street)

SECTION 101: Traffic laws be damned, we can do whatever the fuck we want. Suck it, pedestrians. Get the fuck out of our way.

Oh, I see...never mind.

You definitely have your finger on the pulse of the cycling community.

There's a 'Critical Mass' handbook? Dang I've been on 4 Critical Mass rides and have yet to get one! :-}
However I rarely ride on the sidewalk and when I do it's at pedestrian speed and for safety or to reach a place to lock up my bike. Just to let ya' know.
As to the pedestrians who are texting while walking. I see them when I'm out walking as well. When I do see them I think 2 things. They are stupid for not paying attention to their surroundings. The second, I feel safer as they will get mugged or pickpocketed before me because they aren't paying attention.
Oh and I've had a few walk right into the street while doing it and had to use my trusty little bike bell.
Didn't one of their parents or at least a teacher tell them not to walk down the street reading a book as a kid? It's basically the same thing.

Once again proving that the vast number of San Franciscans who came from somewhere else are passive agressives with severe issues. Like you.

This city is run by idiots who have idiots voting for them. Your pretty hair model GAVIN is a great example of getting what you eventually pay for. Useless twits doing nothing important. Also explains the whole dot com thing starting here and dying here as well. Got tulips? Morons.

And to further illustrate my point, all of you Green-Talking-Lackey-Tards will sit in your single occupancy vehicles idling at endless red lights, stalled in traffic, burning oil and damaging the planet twice as fast because some idiot decided what might be best for everyone instead of thinking it through.

Shutting down the Embarcadero on a Saturday. Are you all fucking high???

You people are LEMMINGS for anything that captures the buzzword of the day. Here's your new buzzword: IDIOTS.

If a single person can explain the reason behind this idiotic move then this is the time to hear it. Please.

wow...so many words...i finally felt like i thought i knew what you were saying when you said "Shutting down the Embarcadero on a Saturday. Are you all fucking high???" but then i lost you after that...
