Tomorrow morning at 5:11 a.m. our fair city will mark the 103rd anniversary of the great quake of '06, which will once again include guest of honor and one of the only living survivors (or the only?), 105-year-old Rose Cliver. Following the gathering at Lotta's Fountain, the day will kick off with a Bloody Mary breakfast at Lefty O'Doul's (333 Geary St) at 7 a.m. and will finish at 11 a.m. with the Survivor Luncheon at John's Grill. The federal government has seen fit to earmark a little less than $10 million (of the $29M budgeted from the USGS's piece of the economic stimulus package) for earthquake readiness upgrades and awareness for the State of California. Given that we have to share this money with LA, and given that $11M only buys a few MUNI vending machines these days, we would call this a pittance. Thanks, dudes.

Why do you keep trying to scare us into being prepared?
Did you know that Lotta's Fountain is an actual, water-spitting fountain? I didn't. But today, I noticed that it was indeed filled with water, as did a gentleman in need of a little wash (and some probably more than a little soap). While the little lion heads were doing their thing... a guy was using the water to wash down his arms head and face.
Beware you early risers: the water, it is tainted.
I cannot wait to see what happens to the thin 60's engineering of the Embarcadero towers during the next big big one. One of those bad boys is going to snap like a cracker if we push the needle much past 7.5
You're a structural engineer.
