The California Academy of Sciences' weekly Nitelife event has been a smash hit since its launch in February. It's hard to beat the $10 cover (as opposed to $25) and the adults-only setting, sans the baby strollers and teenie-boppers.

We went a few weeks ago, and the place was packed. We kept hearing everyone exclaiming to their friends how it was like a nightclub, and we met an Australian who was amazed that San Franciscans are so into science. (We do hear that the spectacular new building is what sparked everyone's new-found interest.)

We got there a little late last time, but we hear the 6 p.m. hour is super quiet, which might be a good time to jump on the rainforest and planetarium. If you do get to the planetarium late, we've been told that even if it's sold out, to still stand in line because often times ticket-holders don't always attend the show, since they signed up a couple of hours earlier and have since left.

We also highly recommend checking out the penguin booth. We're not sure if it's a normal occurrence, but when we were there, there was this single penguin putting on a hilarious show for us onlookers, while the rest of the penguins all slept on the rocks. He swam endless, comical laps, splashed around, and gazed into everyone's eyes and iPhone cameras.
