South Bay Outage Points To Vulnerability of Communications Network

InternetInfrastructure.jpg Not exactly a newsflash, but did you know that our phone and internet infrastructure operates on "a wing and a prayer?" Yes, with a snip of a few wires, as some vandals/"terrorists" did yesterday, communications --including 911 calls -- to entire densely populated regions can be totally disabled!

The culprits aren't known, but now AT&T is offering a $100,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the guilty parties, who, for all we know, were a couple of clever teens or Al Qaeda operatives.

Service has been restored to the three affected counties (Santa Clara, Santa Cruz and San Benito), but holy shit, guys! The San Jose Police Chief is saying, "I pity the individuals who have done this," but Jesus... maybe we should be pitying, and worrying for, ourselves for not having locked up these wires a little better after that messy situation in September, 2001.

cell phone traffic was affected as well, for verizon customers.

Cell towers' traffic is eventually pumped into land based fiber, when traveling more than short distances.

So when you make a call say from SF to NY your mobile phone connects to a particular SF tower. Then that tower connects to a collection point where the mobile call gets sent into a land cable to NY.

On the NY end, it's the reverse process.

The fiber cuts involved Internet, Mobile and landline depending on which carrier was involved...

Wait until they snip the big cable. Then you'll see the shit hit the fan. Or maybe you won't. All of your tweets are belong to us!

Are we sure it wasn't some meth-addled losers trying to score some scrap copper?

saw the tee vee news last night - nothing was stolen and they clearly knew which specific cables to cut to disrupt service across multiple carriers. highly intentional, performed by trained adults who know what happens when you clip multiple cables at the same time.

Communications Workers of America's contract with AT&T ended at 11:59 Saturday night.
