It is rather reminiscent of faux populist claims about the elites. I disagree about the Daily Show blowing or that he's wimping out from confrontation. I just think that maybe when Obama has been in office for longer than 70 days, there will likely be more fodder for amusement. Give the new prez time to disappoint you and make an ass of himself. Okay, geez!

I think 20-somethings are part of their audience too... Granted, that's more Gen Y than Gen X, but you cant exclude them (us).

I don't watch the daily show and I don't mean to defend it specifically, but this post smacks of smug. And not even a normal smug, it's smugly washing its "progressive and over-educated" hands of what it deems to be an inferior brand of smug. I suppose this response is kind of smug, but at least I'm self-aware smug, which I guess makes me an ever higher level of smug. Auugh! There's no escape. The Point: A blog written and consumed mainly by "progressives and over-educated ilk" should probably refrain from such glib characterizations and attacks on popularity; instead simply say the show is partisan, tired, hackneyed, or what have you, if indeed that is what is intended.

On Bronstein, I thought Colbert wasn't tough enough. How about asking, "Do you want an audience or not?" Any newspaper that doesn't want to be searched is welcome to put up a paywall or block all searches with robots.txt. The fact that they whine instead is because they depend on the traffic, but just can't find a way to make it pay. NOT the linker's problem.

I completely agree. With Musharraf he asked, right up front, "Where's Osama bin Laden?" With Jim Cramer, he ran a huge amount of embarrassing tape. With Nancy, he was a total pussy.

I agree, I loved The Daily Show when it made fun of all politicians. Now that we have a Dem as president though he seems afraid to make fun of his gaffs. Last night he interviewed Pelosi and he kissed her a$$. It seems tiresome and partisan now. I could get the same from MSNBC. Also, his attack on Cramer and CNBC seemed lame, populist and ignorant.

I definitely prefer Colbert, but the Daily Show still has its moments. I preferred it, though, back when Carrell and Colbert were correspondents. Even Stephven!

I love the Daily Show. Better than Colbert, even. I dont even know what you're trying to say by "claim to find hilarious" - you think they secretly don't like it? And "the kind of programming they all agreed en masse to find hilarious"? Maybe because it *is* hilarious? The 00Bama segment a couple nights ago was amazing. And "Baby Boomers and Gen Xers"? AKA everyone between 20 and 65?

I still enjoy the Daily Show a great deal, and know better than to think it's not edited to make things seem worse than they actually are. The Colbert Report does the same thing, though. I don't see a huge difference between them, either. John Stewart is still one of the funniest people around, imo.

I don't really see that much difference between the two shows. Certainly not enough to say that one "blows" while the other is one of the best shows on TV. They follow the same formula! I only watch either of them about once a week, maybe Stuart's shtick gets tiresome more quickly?
