So, your industry is collapsing. Hell, your publication is collapsing. So, what do you do?
Apparently, you do this.
We live in an area that has more than its share of luminaries. We're talking about our public figures, the recognized experts in their fields (from science to the arts), and the local notables that make the Bay Area what it is. SFGate has reached out to a number of these personalities, and we're very excited to have so many of them contributing to our Web site.
We're very excited, too! When will these "luminaries" start their contributions, and will these people replace that tragic, tragic list of people you currently have on this page? Because, in a city full of erroneous lists churned out by the media, this one, for lack of a better cliche, takes the cake. Seriously.

the graphic is the worst. it looks like the back of a DVD case and not very newspaperly.
Hey look, one of them is Frances Dinkelspiel, the book smeller from Ghost World

It's a small word after all.
Throw everything on the wall, and see what sticks seems to be the plan. Does the Huffington Post make a buck?
no frank chu???!?
Very "Friends"-like in design. Or, in other words, very mid-90's.
So I was all prepared to go to the page and say "Hey back off! Just because you haven't heard of them doesn't mean they're not interesting!"
But then I went to the page. And HONESTLY -- these you call "Luminaries"?! You're entirely right Brock: sad.
I guess the crazy fat lady who wears the silly hats was unavailable.
jan wahl just gets no respect
The MSM do this a lot to try to seem relevant. Think of KPIX' "Eye On Blogs" which is similarly redundant.
The Washington Post does it right: blogs by their actual reporters, on items of actual news relevance.
I feel pretty dumb because I don't understand why this is sad or even what it really means. Is this one reason why I am unemployed? Would someone explain without being too snarky?
the "sad" is probably referring both to the Chronicle for posting such a list and also the list itself, which is kind of arbitrary. the chronicle, if you haven't noticed, has been in a downward spiral for a while. features like this exemplify the state of desperation they're in - instead of doing real news reporting they're making stupid lists that they think people might be interested in. not only that, but they're posting this really random list on their FRONT page. it's pretty sad.
Thank you, that makes sense now. Yes, if that is the best they can do to draw readers, it's wonder things are the way they are for them.
All they're trying to do is create search engine hits and cross-references to, sadly, improve their statistical relevance.
