San Francisco Journalists Detained in North Korea

Two Current TV journalists, reporter Laura Ling photographer Euna Kim, were detained by soldiers while on assignment near the North Korea's border with China. The journalists were taken into custody by border guards near the Tumen River. While there's no word yet as to the exact reason for Ling and Kim's detainment, State Department spokeswoman Julie Reside tells ABC News that "We are working with the Chinese government in the area to get information on the whereabouts and welfare of the Americans in question. We have also been in touch with North Korean authorities to express our deep concern about this situation. We have also been in touch with our protecting power, the Swedish Embassy in Pyongyang." (Here's a recent report by Ling about the fate of deported gang members in Mexico.)

I hope they get out soon. I secretly am also looking forward to the absurd hilarity that is sure to ensue before that happens. North Korea is so much fun.

It looks like they might have been trying to sneak into North Korea? The Tumen is the river used as an escape route out of North Korea into China, and for smuggling goods back into NK. Let's hope the Chinese help us out in this case. This is going to be a big story.

"Detained" is journalism-speak for "abducted". Let's hope the administration will at least acknowledge the incident, unlike this one: http://freekorea.us/2008/06/28/another-lie-from-christopher-hill/

People will do anything to avoid doing their taxes. I can see right through this whole "I was abducted by the North Koreans" story.

Laura Ling is amazing. and so is the rest of the Vanguard series/team. I enjoy them plenty.
Hope they are safe and free soon-

One of the only professional aspects of currentTV (tell Al Gore those two LA'd out jock messy stoner guys just gotta go bye-bye, what a F*ing joke they are...)

They seem to be a cut above your normal "citizen journalist", who would no doubt be complaining, "I told the police officer to fuck off just like I do when I'm in San Francisco, next thing you know I'm being tortured!"
