Despite a worsening economy, the Census Bureau estimates growth in all 9 Bay Area counties, with the largest year over year growth of 32,500 people in Santa Clara County. "Even though the economy is terrible, it's performing better here than elsewhere," says Stephen Levy, director of the Center for the Continuing Study of the California Economy. Though a more accurate tally won't be available until the 2010 decennial census, the 2008 estimate for San Francisco's population is now 808,976, up 10,000 over 2007 and up over 44,000 from 2006 due to an appeal by the city for a revised estimate. The state of CA currently estimates SF's population much higher, at 843,000.
