SFist Eats: Stretch Your Dollar, Waistband, on Monday Nights at Jardinière

duck-mole.jpg
Liberty Farms Duck in Black Mole, Black Bean Tamale, and Plantains, a dish from Jardinière's Oaxacan Monday Night Dinner.
Beginning this Monday, Jardinière will be catering to the value-conscious consumer (who wants to splurge every now and then) with a weekly prix fixe menu, which features dishes from a different region of the world each Monday night. For $45, you get a top-notch, four-course meal and a wine pairing for each dish. The wine usually doubles the bill with such meals, so this is an offer we can't refuse, when the budget allows.

The featured regions for the next few Monday nights are Devil's Gulch (Northern California), Dordogne, (South East France), Savoie (French Alps), and Tuscany (Italy). A vegetarian option will be offered each Monday as well.

Chef/Owner Traci Des Jardin hosted a press preview this past Monday, which featured a scrumptious Oaxacan Dinner. The Ceviche Costeño was citrusy and refreshing, the Liberty Farms Duck in Black Mole (containing over 21 ingredients) melted in our mouth, as did the Cinnamon Churros with Oaxacan Hot Chocolate. We liked the Caldillo de Nopales but weren't a fan of the dried shrimp that came in it.

Since Monday nights are generally slow in the food biz, we hope more restaurants follow Jardinière's brilliant lead!

Yum. Will there be veggie options?

Nope: lamb; cassoulet; chicken; pig.

Great question, rahir! It's just been confirmed that a vegetarian pre fixe option will also be offered each Monday. I've updated the post too.

Ooh. I stand happily and deliciously corrected.

$45 for dinner is for the value-conscious consumer?

Order off the menu instead of the prix fixe and you'll see how much of a value this is. I spent about $80 per person the last time I was there (not including what I dropped at the bar before and after the meal)

I think "value" usually refers more to a global frame of reference. This might be a good deal ($80 worth of food for $45) but it's not good value ($45 is a lot to pay for a single meal).

Thanks for everyone's input. I put a slight clarification at the beginning, which now reads: "the value-conscious consumer (who wants to splurge every now and then)."

I am as frugal as they come (probably have a smaller paycheck than most of you), and I allow myself to splurge on a meal like this at least once a year, on my birthday.

(probably have a smaller paycheck than most of you)

Don't bet on it.

Yeah, mine is currently $0.

i can buy plantains for like half a buck each. a month of groceries for one of your damned "meals"

oh yeah and i'd vomit but i cant afford to waste the food.

A refreshing attitude usually reserved for vegans.

I thought lamb was for vegetarians.

As cheap as I am, I think with wine this is a pretty good deal. I'd still rather spend the money elsewhere, but it's nice to see they are making an effort to reach the masses.

I would really prefer it if they offered it without the wine. Not all of us drink and having such an option would almost certainly cut the price in half.

Errrm, Leanne... :) "prix fixe". It's not "before fixed", it's a "fixed price" :)

Ha, thanks, Jonas. I swear I had double-checked that.
