meh. whatever. the san francisco skyline was destroyed when they built that dumb supertall condo tower. where were the activists then? that thing totally fucked the skyline. before, it was like "hey look at the sf skyline and all the tall buildings" now with that stupid condo tower, there's a point of reference that makes you say "wow, look how dinky sf's downtown is."

Technically isn't Starfleet headquartered in the Presidio (thought up way back before the military pulled out)? That's the real reason Lucas bought up so much of it, he wants to keep out the competition.

Except that science fiction often becomes science fact.

Though when geeks start pre-protesting it's time for them to get on some good meds and a laxative.

I'm not sure it's a point I'd make in public, but a point nonetheless.

That was awesome. I don't know if he was trying to be funny but it did make me smile. I think the key is "human scale," which he meant in a good way (I think) and that's how I took it.

He does have a point. In order for to get a building built in 300 years time, the developers would have to apply for a permit round about now.

300 years is a long time. maybe by 24th Century standards those buildings are "provincial" and modest.

I have to say when I saw the trailer I cracked up a little and thought to myself "wow the preservationists in the 24th century must have lost the war once and for all." I mean, SF is all Dubai-like in the future (and has mass transit!)

However, there's a simple answer to this (and why Starfleet Command decimates the Marin Headlands for their HQ AND Starfleet Academy): World War 3

In every iteration of Star Trek, earth had a World War 3 that included significant nuclear detonations.

And, later on, post-trek in "deep space 9", there was an attack tha resulted in the complete destruction of HQ and the Bridge:

wait, star trek is supposed to be REALISTIC?!?

No one can predict what a city will look like in 300 years... not Star Trek, definitely not some random youtube guy.

That guy just made my day. Perhaps the Star Trek producers were attempting to make a commentary on the size of buildings in SF. I think I saw Randy Shaw's name in the credits!
