Comment Wars: Eater vs. Yelpers

comment wars.jpg

Whether it be his readers or the wait staff at Bar Bambino, Eater editor extraordinaire, Paolo Lucchesi, can get almost anyone whipped up into a frothy frenzy. Take, for example, the very innocent post he posted up yesterday, linking to Lauren Smiley's feature article on Yelp in this week's SF Weekly. The article, more or less, is about how business owners strive to keep Yelpers happy in order to get good reviews. (Great job, Lauren!) But the real meat here is Eater mentioning the "Yelp elite" via a quote from said article, which prompted the comments section to explode.

What's the dust-up all about? We can't say for sure, exactly. But any comment thread boasting such terms as "you losers are so jealous of yelp," "douchebags," "leeches," and "AIDS-ridden cock" is well worth your time. Check it out.

Why are some users so quick to defend Yelp? If SFist adopted a questionable business model, I'll throw you all right under the bus!

When yelp is you only source of internet street cred then you have to defend it.

Internet street cred. Is that like vegan short ribs?

Paolo is a nice guy, why would anyone pick on him or Eater? it's a fun site to read.

I'm pretty sure all those comments are from the same person.

does anyone take Yelp seriously anymore? one star reviews get written and prominently posted; yelp contacts the restaurant and suggests they purchase advertisement on the site; yelp 'sweetens' the deal by promising to push all one star reviews to the bottom and inflate (ie: write and post) better reviews. it's an extortion racket that's the envy of the mafia. it's how social networks get coopted and manipulated.

i found a great emergency dentist on yelp (UOP), so i have found yelp helpful in dire moments.

you do have a beautiful smile!

Yelp: Too many bitchy Zagat wannabes. No stars.
