House Speaker Nancy Pelosi fancies herself a star more than an elected official, at least according to a NY Post report that claims team Pelosi has been "berating military officials to get the best planes." According to the Rupert Murdoch-owned gossip rag, "Pelosi, who clashed with the military to get nonstop service when she flies home to California with police protection on government planes, revealed a particular fondness for Gulfstream's sleek G-5 - a plane glamorized in Hollywood films and rap videos."
A plane that closeted homosexuals AND black people like? Chilling.
A sample of an angry email that Pelosi aides allegedly wrote to military officials whine, "[i]t is my understanding there are no G-5s available for the House during the Memorial Day recess. This is totally unacceptable . . . The speaker will want to know where the planes are." And after the Air Force dared to offer up a Boeing 737 in lieu of the high-glitz aircraft, another aide fumed, "[t]his is not good news, and we will have some very disappointed folks, as well as a very upset speaker."

She should fly Virgin America. Based in SF, with comfy massage chairs and movies on demand, and surely they could negotiate a better govt rate than whatever the military charges?

Why isn't she flying commercial like most other congress people do? Last time I visited my parental units in the Midwest, I saw Senator Carl Levin walking around the airline lounge.

Because she is third in line for the presidency and has very different security requirements. I believe the Secret Service doesn't want her to fly commercial.
That is correct, the Secret Service does not want her to stop to refuel either hence the need for an aircraft that can fly non-stop. This whole rehash of the same story that the Republicans tried to pin on her when she took office seems very suspect. As I recall the Sergeant at Arms is responsible for scheduling her transportation anyway, not her office. Also, a 737 or a C-40 B/C as the Military calls them is significantly larger than a G-5. The notion that she would be upset with a bigger, newer plane than the G-5 makes me think that this is more Rupert than reality. Oh and the last time they trotted out this story allegedly it was her demanding a 757 ( C-32)....

The One About The Airplanes

Fox News and Drudge are predictably hyping a recycled report from Judicial Watch about Speaker Pelosi's use of Air Force planes for transportation.
This is stupid for many reasons, including the following:
* The Speaker is second in line to the presidency
* The policy of providing the Speaker of the House with an Air Force airplane (when available) began after 9/11 by the Bush Administration for Dennis Hastert.
* When Pelosi took over, the House Sergeant at Arms (responsible for Member security) requested a plane large enough to reach her district non-stop (Hastert was from Illinois)
* The DoD makes the final decision
* The House employee listed by Judicial Watch doesn't even work on Pelosi's staff...they work for House Interparliamentary Affairs. I found it with Google!
Next phony controversy, please...
Talked with a gov't worker and she said that VIRGIN AMERICA has the best contract rates for government employees traveling from DC to SF , I think $99 each way any flight anytime.... versus a g-5 .. is $50,000 each way ..... if she needs a jet to get back to DC in an "EMERGENCY" since somehow she's 2nd inline to run the freak show.... she can charter a jet there are 100's sitting idol in the bay area. at a lot cheaper or one of her Hollywood supporters can loan her theirs....
Pelosi doesn't really need to fly back here, for all the representing she does.

@reader: I have no problem with Pelosi getting the plane, but that is not what this story is about. It is about Pelosi complaining that she should have a G-5 rather than a 737 which make her look awfully whiney; but then we already knew that.
But the story never said that Pelosi actually complained about anything, it quoted an unnamed aide who said that Pelosi would be unhappy about the lack of a G-V. Possible this aide thinks that the Right would have a field day with Pelosi taking a 737 back to the place that must remain unvisited.
@ SFBurke - The 737 burns 5300 lbs of fuel per hour vs the smaller G-V which burns approx 2700 lbs per hour. How is the request for a smaller more fuel efficient jet look "whiney"?
This is old news. Peeps been bitching about Princess Pelosi's airplane habits since she became Speaker of the House. Who cares? She's from San Francisco. She's entitled to fly in a more stylish manner than all those other people in Congress.

This is two-year-old news, and if this is the best the GOP has to offer, they'll be right up next to the Whigs and the Federalists in the Dead Parties Museum. Even W's people were willing to defend the one-hop rule. There are plenty of reasons to dislike Nancy P., but this ginned-up "scandal" says more about the people flogging the dead horse than it does Madame Speaker.
Still wondering how she got the job. Highly suspicious

They need to get rid of this piece of dog excrement and put someone in office that has some morals, ethics, and common sense. She is a complete waste of taxpayers' hard earned money, a disgrace to the people of CA and an even bigger disgrace to the people of this country. Just because she's third in line for the presidency doesn't make her any better than the rest of us, and to be quite frank, it scares the daylights out of me to think she could even be in line at all!!! I'm not too sure what has become of this country, but the citizens need to wake up, smell the coffee, and get rid of all of the crooks (on both sides of the isle) in D.C. and get back to the founding principles before it's too late!
