@suki - you can't have more than $2000 in the bank. I don't know what the income limits are when I applied, it was really easy and quick, but I did it at the Harrison St location, when I applied for Medi-Cal. The Mission location is a bit hairier and you probably will wait longer. If you can fax it in, do it.

if you go to: freeprintshop dot org, you can find a downloadable pdf of local places to get san francisco foodbank food. probably not sustainable in the long run, but an okay way to get a basic (free) meal each day.

As someone who once dealt with the "welfare" system (although not for food stamps), I have to say, I would have to be damn near starving and sleeping on a street corner before I'd even consider applying for food stamps. Those offices, those employees, the whole thing seems designed to demoralize and humiliate you as much as possible, maybe in an attempt to discourage applicants.

Don't go unless you DON'T have any savings...I had 100 bucks in a savings account and that disqualified me, Also, the disdain factor was high...

As an Americorps, "Food Stamps" is the name of the game... Tip: Fax your application in! I faxed mine, a worker called me and we did everything without me having to go in. It was super simple.

i know someone who tried to get food stamps once. to those of you who are trying to get them: get prepared to stand in line for hours, and be open to harassment if you're dressed "gay"

call 2-1-1. you can find out how to get access to hundreds of community services 24/7 in any language you can think of.
