Kind of odd that the Power to the Peacful concert has been doing free concerts at that exact same spot for over a decade now without anywhere near the amount of complaints.

Not sure if it’s because that concert is free, if more locals show up to it and just know how to use their bicycle and not complain, or if as someone else pointed out this is Burning Man prep week, so Outside Lands is 99 % non burners. Not sure.

The line up last year was really disjointed, like someone from KFOG and an intern from LIVE105 got to fight over the bill. Don Henley must die, poke a sharp stick in his eye! Are you kidding me? It was fun to ride my bike around outside, but not sure if I would ever pay any money to be inside.

The big question is, will any of the big west coast festivals try and book Faith No More now that they’ve gotten back together….

I received word from my blog that the weekend will also be packed full of Giants baseball games and 49ers Sunday football.

Get ready for Muni hell again.

Clearly you did not venture up to Pemberton Fest in British Columbia. The 10 mile drive from Whistler to Pemberton - only one road in - took 3 hours. We had the "VIP parking" so we only had to wait 30 minutes to park and 20 minutes for a shuttle. Once at the festival the entire grounds was a giant dustcloud such that halfway through Tom Petty we threw in the towel and went home. Next day was Coldplay - the primary reason we flew up to Vancouver - and we blew it off.

If anyone wants to save some money (hey, we're in a recession here!) feel free to spot me $10 a head ($15 for couples) and you can sit in my living room while I play some really loud DMB Live CD's, rub dirt on your good shoes and charge you $5 bucks (a BARGAIN!) for a 12 ounce cup of beer. I will be renting a porta potty for your bathroom pleasures, but use it early because some dude in the 'hood keeps torching them.

For an extra $5, I'll masturbate and play the guitar for you. Badly. No flash pictures, please.

As great as this will be for the city's tourism, I'm not so stoked. DMB, whoever they pick, let's just hope their organisation is better than last year's. Clogged N-Judahs, unsuccessful MUNI re-routings, early closing BART ... and let's not talk about the massive amount of shit that tore up the track fields for the runners. Let's face it, people outside (and inside) of SF don't really want to walk that extra six feet to sort out and throw away (or recycle) their compostable beer cups and plates.

But hey, on the bright side, free concert! Climbing those fences was way too easy.

The Treasure Island Music Festival of a month later has Bauers busses that took us to and from the island. it worked super smoothly. Outside Lands should do something similar going to and from a BART station in downtown.

Oyf, Outside Lands was my worst concert experience of last year. I made the mistake of going on Muni(1.5 hrs) , showing up hungry (.75 hrs) ,thirsty for a beer (1.75 hrs!), having to go to the bathroom (.5). The sounds system dropped Radiohead's signal twice for over a minute. They put a giant white tent right in front of Beck's stage making him invisible to 90% of us.
It was so disorganized we had to climb over fences just to get out and go home early!
Ugh! It makes me shudder just to think of it again.

SF Citizen already released the list:

http://sfcitizen.com/blog/2009/03/03/2009-outside-lands-festival-in-golden-gate-park-its-on-august-28-30/

As for Jack Johnson... vomit! There's a reason why he was kicked off some of the local radio stations, just too boring!

Seeing Radiohead play live in GG park in the first ever night show was worth a lot to me. But between the N-Judah that was not prepared, the crazy crowds, and the poor security that let people slip through fences when I had dropped a not insubstantial wad of cash on the tickets, I came close to regretting it. If the format is the same (big headliner friday night, smaller bands rest of weekend), I think I will forgo that opening night.

If it's DMB then all of that is moot since I don't think I would bother to stop by a free show of theirs. Not hating, just not my thing.

how do you assess a city's taste in music? through interactions with a small sample of people? that's not very telling.

maybe one good way to do it is to use trends.google.com and search for "good" artists and "bad" ones. when filtered to US cities the Dave Matthews Band is searched for most in suburban areas, except for Pittsburgh, PA, which appears to like them a lot. for "good" i will use David Bowie, SF is #8 in the US in searches for Bowie. not bad if you ask me. Maybe he's too obvious. SF comes in at #2 for Cocteau Twins. #5 for Miles Davis. based on these results, imo, SF has good taste in classic rock, shoegazer, and jazz.

I've had too much coffee today. :(
