Film du Jour: Newsom on Real Time with Bill Maher

San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom appeared on Real Time with Bill Maher this weekend? Did you see it? Neither did we. This is the kind of Quality TV programming should be reserved for PBS.

But here is the budding national celebrity, along with actor Alan Cumming, annoying political satirist PJ O'Rourke, liberal wonk George Stephanopoulos, and author Robin Wright. Ta-da.

I watched it, and although I always find PJ O'Rourke seriously annoying, I felt he was slightly less so this time around.

I saw it and the best I can offer is that he was definitely "on message" in an almost uncomfortable manner.

Until I saw this video, I never before realized quite how stiffly awkward is The Gav. I think he's been hanging out with The Feinstein too much.

While watching this I realized that Newsom could be a great character in a David Lynch movie. He could be played by Alan Cumming by channeling "Rooster" from the Annie movie. Except that he would have to switch between a fake Ivy league accent and an occasional southern twang which maybe Newsom picked up from Palin somehow. Newsom spent a lot of time scowling since no one seemed too interested in his diatribes.
