Orange County Mayor Sends Out Racist Email

anoeaster11.jpg

Oh, Orange County. We do miss you sometimes.

You screamed "treason!" and "unpatriotic!" for the last eight years whenever someone questioned George Bush's leadership. But now you cry "how P.C.!" when people come down on elected officials sending out racist fun like this.

It seems Los Alamitos Mayor Dean Grose -- who presides over a northern Orange County town east of the 405, for those of you Orange Curtain expatriates who keep count of such things -- sent out a questionably humorous but clearly racist jpeg to several colleagues.

According to Pam's House Blend (which is always steamin'!), via TotalBuzz, Grose's email along with the image at right included the heading, "No Easter Egg hunt this year."

Then, well, it just gets better.

"I think he's saying that since there's a black president, there will be no need to hunt for eggs since they're growing watermelons in the front yard this year," said Keyanus Price, an African American who was among those receiving the email. Price told Fletcher that she considers the email rascist [sic] and offensive.

"What I'm concerned about is how can this person send an e-mail out like this and think it is OK?" Price said. "He's putting the city into a bad place and he is a liability."

Grose apologized to Price, city council members and others.

"It was just poor judgment on my part and I am deeply sorry," he said.

If you recall, similar incidents erupted when leaders of the Sacramento County Republican Party and the Chaffey Community Republican Women Federated of San Bernardino County sent out Blanche Knott-themed gems with disastrous results. This just goes to show that if you're someone of-a-certain-age, you really should stick to only forwarding images of kittens and babies -- in rich text format, of course.

Ah yes, good old Artificial County. People don't seem to realize how racist it can be down there. I lived there for quite some years, and this kind of mentality was all too common. I'm glad that at least people now are saying something against it.

What was the purpose of preserving the misspelling?

Accuracy. If SFist changed the text it could cause the whole snippet to be underjudgement. And/or could reflect poorly on SFist copy-paste abilities if they didn't indicate that that wasn't their fault.

Really, "sic" is not that uncommon.

This is certainly in poor taste but lets also not forget the same type of racism focused on Colin Powell and Condi Rice.Racism and bigotry is ugly whether its focused on a Republican or Democrat.

unless the target is thin and pretty, in which case said racism is just mean.

Could you maybe illustrate the racism and bigotry focused on Colin Powell and Condi Rice?

jesus this site is pathetic -- I saw this same story over 24 hours ago on an NYC-based blog. getting scooped on a story in your own backyard -- no wonder "journalism" is dying.

First off, SFist isn't journalism, but second, what do you do for a living that's so wonderful, MouthWad?

Watermelon? I don't get it.... ?

FIRST, ignorant elists, ORANGE COUNTY is a great place to live.

Don't blame OC for the racist or racist comments. We don't breed them here. I've been to SF many times, and have often encountered anti-OC snobs. To be honest, I'm sick of it. You don't know what you're talking about, so stick to what you do know (which isn't much, I'm sure).

Sounds like you live east of the freeway. Har.

Keep fighting the good fight, OC Girl!

And now he has been forced to resign.

Perhaps now he can move somewhere nicer?

Who didn't get this email? I think I found it in my email twice. It's just silly, that's what I thought when I saw it. I really don't think it's any big deal. There were much worse emails about Bush and Clinton when they were in office. If you don't like it, do what I do, Delete it. It seems like people just wait around, hoping to find something to bitch about. Don't sweat the small stuff.
Orange county Rocks! But don't come here and commit crimes, our cops will blow you a way.
