Are You Still Waiting In Line for MSF?

msf.jpg

As always, Sexpigeon was way ahead of the curve. But now other folks are asking, is Mission Street Food still a Thursday night must-do?

Let's call it the Chronicle effect: cool, somewhat indie restaurant (finally) gets written up (somewhat inaccurately, according to one of its subjects. Hmm.) in the Chron, and fearing untenable lines, many of the faithful stay away.*

Mission Mission's Allan Hough offer's a different perspective:

It's not getting less popular. The expansion to a second day means maybe lines aren't as long, but you're the second reporter [you flatter us!] this week to ask me to share my feelings on MSF, and chatter amongst the people I follow on Twitter hasn't died down one bit.

Whatever the case -- two days of availability instead of the one, a loss of cred/fear of overwhelming lines after its "discovery" by the Chronicle, or the notoriously fickle nature of restaurant patrons -- this week might be the week to go to MSF, and not just because you want to bring some leftover "acorn soup with foraged mushrooms" back home for your pet squirrel.

How about you? Are you now, or have you ever been, a Mission Street Foodie? Give us some perspective in the comments.

*Perhaps they stay home and enjoy the wisdom of those crankily lovable Gate commenters. Our current fave: sfcurmudgeon says "these guest "chefs" need to clean themselves up a bit before i'll eat anything they cooked... that Lief guy looks a bit too scruffy (like, buy him a razor or something) to be working with food." You're so right, ALWAYS do a stubble test before eating at any restaurant. Did we mention how awesome SFist commenters are?.

We are awesome.
Bitchy, but awesome.

I'd rather have bitchy than boorish any day!

Half the commenters on sfgate.com need to pull the stick out and get on with life.

I don't want to turn into one of those people but...

Yeah, it's great MSF has expanded to a second night. Yes, it's awesome to see profits being donated to charity. But goddamnit Chron, you couldn't have left it alone?! The food is great and I liked bringing friends to some dodgy looking front and leaving thoroughly pleased. You've now stolen that from me. Thanks.

Just because you say you don't want to turn into one of those people doesn't mean you haven't.

"Oh my gosh, we totally got to go to MSF! What? You've never heard of MSF? It's *totally* awesome! It's all dodgy and sketchy, and it's like a speakeasy, only underground foodies know about it. OMG so scary! It's like, totally an adventure! SO cool. And even if you have looked at a blog about SF in the past 8 months you would know about it, it is totes underground! C'mon Bree, let's go! C'MON, IT'S AWESOME! TAKE OFF YOUR SECOND-HAND PRADAS YOU GOT ON VALENCIA AND RUN! QUICK! BEFORE THE CHRON WRITES ABOUT IT!!!!"

I'm pretty sure I proved my OWN point by saying "but..." I was well aware of what I sounded like by posting what I did.

Jesus f*ck dude; relax.

Oh, I apologize, btw. That was mean of me.

Very true. I can't imagine how it's been "underground" really. Didn't SFist start talking about it the week or so that it started up? Not exactly a small-time, word-of-mouth thing then.

I haven't actually had a chance to head out because, well, I never happen to be anywhere remotely near the Mission on a Thursday night. A shame that it's seemingly become (or quickly on its way to becoming) overly crowded to the point that it's unlikely to remain tenable or worth the effort in the future.

it was two-fer, since 7x7 just wrote about MSF as well. Though to be fair, does anyone (besides me) really read that magazine?
They should its way better than SF magazine.

7x7? You're the first person I've heard say they read it.

Jesus fuck, people, if going out to dinner starts to feel like a job, maybe take a few goddammed weeks off until you're excited to go again.

I haven't been in three weeks but was there every single week since week 2 in the roach coach trailer. Love the food and the concept. Especially love the price. Gastronomicdiva and I could get just about one of every item offered and still leave only spending $42 bucks. I'm talking like 6 dishes here.

We never did have to wait in line, just made a point of showing up at 5:45. We did see lines after we were sat. The service was(is) hit and miss but always friendly. The food every time but once was a total hit.

The experience is awesome considering you are squatting in an old Chinese place eating gourmet food with random dishes/paper plates and utensils. The irony would make a hipster cum and the food is a cheap foodie's dream.

Recently the recession and the lack of desire for a mad dash to early dinner has stopped our weekly visits. Don't care where it was written up or how many people go. I'm happy to see local business people succeed.
