5 Shot in the Tenderloin, 1 Dead

Over on the glamorous intersection of Turk and Taylor -- do you think rent for a studio is still astronomical over there? Even though it's in the pit on the TL? Even with what we're about to tell you? -- five people were shot last night at around 10:30 pm. One woman (described as "nice, pretty, educated and outgoing") died as a result of the shooting. A silver Mercedes SUV was involved in the shooting. After the attack, said vehicle headed across the Bay Bridge. Although a chase ensued at speeds of up to 110 mph, SFPD and Oakland police "eventually lost track of the Mercedes" somewhere in the East Bay. No word yet as to a motive. Update: According to a commenter, the Mercedes was "torched" after the chase. Dramatic.

the car was torched in Oakland on 34th st in the Neldams Bakery parking lot. i live on the block and saw it on fire, cops had it put out within 5 minutes probably. i'm sure he just got off at Webster, which gives you three streets to possibly turn on, then the cops lost him.

Doesn't this sort of thing happen every other day in neighborhoods east of the TL? I find it interesting that they're giving this incident a lot more coverage that most.

I think that the coverage is based on the fact that FIVE people got shot at the rather early hour of 10:30pm.

If it was one or two people at 2 or 4 in the morning, I would understand.

Even in this crime-ridden city, this stands out.

Isn't that around SFPD shift change time?

that's true. it was a pretty sensational scene.

Agreed. Its the brazenness + the car chase. Curious about the victims. Geary Blvd is really a firewall for people living N of the TL!

I think this is pretty much the first time I can recall that I've ever heard of a significant crime suspect successfully escaping the police by car. What happened...SFPD pulled a Roscoe P. Coltrane and turned their cars around once they hit the county line?

the freeway exit they likely took splits off into two directions. and then on Webster you can go in three directions and theres a hill so you could lose sight. so unless a cop was right behind them it would be hard to follow i guess.

still a bunch of charred and melted plastic/metal on the ground. oddly, the Neldam's parking lot backs up to a CHP station. hah.

I always hang out in the TL after dark. It seems like a pretty safe place, especially Turk and Taylor. And how long does it take for a car to get across the bridge and into Oakland? Do those SFPD cars have them new fangled radios so they can call the JV Donut Patrol over in Oakland?

Besides, wouldn't that be the most likely destination for somebody shooting a bunch of people in the TL? Seems to be a trend anyway. They sure aren't heading to Mill Valley or Burlingame.
