I suggest madeline smith moore, MacArthur Metro, reporter and writer. She can write a flaming letter to the editor. Also in the "They work hard for little pay (some of them, anyway), have nervous breakdowns over newfangled technology" link, the reporter was right. Speaking as someone who has been both reporter and pr hack, that pr hack should have immediately called the reporter back. Sure he was a trifle obnoxious, but when you have to deal with pr hack/scum/protozoa like that one, you are bound to get a little tetchy. PS Isn't it nice that Tim Kingston is getting all those hugs? Now guess my name....

I vote for the Chron's Henry K. Lee. His crime reporting is both tight and right -- clear, concise, dispassionate, crimey. Also, if I had to tolerate the daily criticism of SFGate's comment board neanderthals, I would probably gouge my eyes out with a red pencil.

Thank you, Jen and Brock, for remembering the copy editors, who happily toil in obscurity, without bylines or glory, for you, the reader. We fight against misspellings, bad grammar and, most of all, errors in fact (and judgment). And we don't even roll our eyes when writers get all diva on us! I think the winner should get a cape with a "J" (for journalism) on it.

I am going to second this nomination: Alexis Madrigal is a tireless worker and believes in his work greatly. He also isn't afraid to work hard outside of Wired. He was the first to experiment with our nonprofit to do community funded reporting and he did a MONSTOR of a story for very little money: http://spot.us/stories/69

Most of them work hard for little money. It's a lot of hard work to get anywhere near recognition and a decent salary in journalism. And that's why I ditched that career path not long after college.
