Fowler Hate

mob_pitchforks_small.jpg

You know greater-good types who, under the impression they're doing God's work, treat people like crap on a one-on-one basis? You know the type, right? (Because, let's face it, you might be one.) Stephen Fowler is their sovereign king. That is, if you go by the hate stemming from the interwebs these days. Ranked no. 3 last night on Google Trends, Noe Valley residents Fowler and his life coach wife, Renee Stephens, have developed quite a following after appearing on a disastrous episode of Wife Swap.

Beth Sportswood reports, "The world is now in an anti-Fowler uproar, posting his personal and work information on the internet and creating my favorite new website, www.stephenfowlersucks.com."

And Valleywag has the wife's censored confession. It seems Stephens published and the removed her first apology online, with the second apology revealing that she has asked Fowler to seek professional help since the episode aired.

While no one on this episode come off all too swell -- which is kind of the point of Wife Swap -- Fowlers touched a nerve with America, while setting the people-in-Noe Valley-aren't-all-self-righteous-pricks movement back several years.

There but for the grace of God go I, you mumble? Yeah. Same here.

Noe Valley resident, not Now Valley :-)

Snobs like Stephen make San Francisco look really bad, but any blue-state demographic watching reality t.v. probably already has a poor opinion of Baghdad by the Bay.

Stephen makes Stephen look bad. He's a Brit. They can take responsibility.

Through all this brouhaha my surprise is that nobody is concerned about the kids. I distinctly remember the mother saying she doesn't spend much time with them because it "doesn't fit with her personality" and it *sniff* makes her cranky. No shit.

He says what we are all thinking, right?

2009 is the year to get your hate on. But not to worry. Obama will kiss it and make it mobetta.

But what stokes the hate are web sites like SFist which continue to keep the story alive long after it should have died.

Hey, I lapped up the original story as much as anyone, but I think you're re-running this a second time now (on a rather weak premise) because you saw the huge surge in Fowler hits on Google yesterday and you want your piece of the action.

I'm guessing that your last Fowler story was the #1 draw of the week last week, am I right? The much-flogged AA story is, after all, too local.

Finally, as a hook for today's link bait, you accuse your gentle readers of behaving like an angry mob? How positively Fowleresque of you.

fowler comes off as a douche, to be sure, but it is a cheap shot by the media to slur an entire city and suggest the entire City is being populated by folks like this.

I mean, I could go to some other part of the country, pick out their worst representatives and make a sideshow out of it, but that would be, um, being a douche.

ah life in the cultural down cycle...so....so....

As long as it makes ad-buy quotas it's ok. Isn't it?

I'm not sure where this local indignation is coming from. Everyone I know in this city is more or less like the Fowlers. Being a San Franciscan and having a superiority complex go hand in hand.

amen. i've been waiting for the "stephen fowler speaks for me" group on facebook for over a week, now.
