Mayor Gavin Newsom announced a bold plan today, SF Promise. The idea is that all SF 6th graders who graduate high school will gain admission to San Francisco State University. The partnership between the San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD), the City and County of San Francisco (CCSF), and San Francisco State University (SFSU) will also provided financial aid for those who need it. The goals of the plan, according to the press release, "are to increase state university admission eligibility and graduation rates, increase the number of students who receive post-secondary education, and increase the number of students who attend California universities from traditionally underrepresented groups." cahletche for everybody!
Guaranteed admission to a fourth tier school. Gee.
Gruesome Newsom needs to spend less time pushing these flashy gimmicks that he thinks will make him look "innovative" in his quixotic run for governor and more time actually running this city. All I want are turd free sidewalks. Is that so much to ask for?
"Flashy Gruesome Gimmicks" for $500, Alex?
> All I want are turd free sidewalks. Is that so much to ask for?
Maybe not, but I'd like to see someone do something about the murders in the Mission and all the other random violence that no one likes to talk about in SF.
But I guess his wise political advisers (the ones WITHOUT hot wives) are thinking he gets elected Governor via the "I brought WiFi to the hood" or perhaps today's flashy gimmick of the now.
I know you just can't stand newsome, but this is a good thing since the alternative is not a third of higher tiered school, but none.
Secondly, its not innovative, the state of texas guarantees admission to a certain tranche of students - its pretty widespread.
But yes I agree. Newsome is a bag of hair. we get it.
I don't think SF State turns anyone right now anyway. How the hell else would I have been admitted?
Fourth tier my ass. Try ninth or tenth. When I graduated from that dump back in 2000 there were so many crybaby protesters I told friends I went to STFU. And under that idiot who calls himself "mayor' the best you will get is a free turd on every sidewalk. Possibly two or three is you ask him nicely.
I have to wonder how this is going to affect SFSU's dropout rate.
Guaranteed admission to SFSU is no reward. People who want to put themselves on the SFSU track would be best advised to complete their first two years at CCSF. General Education courses (the courses students would take in the first two years) would probably be much better at CCSF if only because of the much smaller class sizes (30 - 50 compared to auditoriums in SFSU).
@oskarv: SFSU is not full of auditoriums and 500 person classes, although the sex ed class is the biggest one around.
well. it's cheaper at any rate, and the quality of education would be similar. going to ccsf for 2 years and getting above a 2.0 basically guarantees admission to sfsu anyway. why spend the extra dough? sfsu general ed courses really aren't going to be anymore stimulating than at a community college.
I would be impressed if Stanford made the same offer to East Palo Alto.
Like Newsom or not, it's a good idea. Same for SFSU.
Arnie always looks to cut education to to shore up the budget (does he hate kids?), but cutting education its the first way to increase crime and screw over an economy. Better we do it as a city if the state won't.
Moreover, adding the incentive of higher education won't hurt teachers, students or their families.
As for those who pooh-pooh SFSU, pampered-ass bedwetters will complain that it's not top- or second-, or even third-tier. Not every school is top tier, and if that's what you want, try to get into one. If you failed out, then maybe you're the fuckup, not the school.
Word.
What kind of weirdo would complain about this? Education is great.
A University that only requires a 6th grade diploma to get in? I guess the reputation is deserving!
Ahh, the comments of the privileged.
Our Mayor is privileged enough to avoid the random violence that plagues this City each and every day.
Schools & education are a key component in fighting that. So Kudos for that.
I think some of these comments might have been tempered by perceptions of his ultimate failure in many other aspects of running the City.
Wait, one step back, SFSU is a SCHOOL? I thought it was just a nexus of fornication and of-age/underage drunkenness.
Either way, now we can ensure that we have actual natives engaging in dorm antic sex with the SoCal girls that had been wanting to escape their parents all senior year, and no way in hell were going to Long Beach State because of such.
Another one of Newsom's gimmicks. Just like Shop SF (yet Newsom bought his own car in Colma), the tree planting program (trees were not watered or even planted correctly) and the Healthy SF program (funding and staff are completely inadequate for even basic services.)
When will the public realize they've been had by a scam artist?
SF State is already crowded as it is, as a 4th year, the current graduation time here is 5-6 years.
i think this plan will only delay our education, and SFSU will just get more money..
