Help Find Violent North Beach Assault Suspect(s)

assault in north beach.jpg

A cherished, brilliant SFist commenter, whose name will private unless told otherwise, was assaulted with a deadly weapon at a busy intersection in North Beach last week. He told SFist the following.

This happened to me. Some asshole came up behind me as I was crossing Union between Columbus and Stockton and smashed me just above the right ear and immediately knocked me unconscious. By the time I realized I was hit, I was out cold. They also broke my right leg in two places (tibia) and I have more bruises than I can even count right now. They didn't get my wallet but made off with my two bags of stuff I bought earlier in the day in NB (prosciutto, bread, cake, wine - the usual stuff thieves go after).

I was just released from SF General on Saturday after they cut me open and inserted a metal pole into my leg. It will take 6-8 weeks for the leg to heal. The first people on the scene told SFPD that they saw a guy and girl in their 20's with a dog leaving the scene quickly.

It actually happened earlier in the evening than the police report indicates. Obviously the whole time line is hazy as I was unconscious for around 10 minutes but it happened sometime between 8:30-9:30pm on Tuesday 1/20.

If you know anyone who was in the area around that time on Tuesday evening and saw anything please let me know. I'm 6'2" and 210lbs, so if they got to me walking in that area at that time of night, then nobody else is safe until these people are caught.

First, our heart goes out to this commenter. Second, please help us catch this guy. This happened near Washington Square Park, so if any of you know anything, please contact the SFPD at 415-392-2623.

goodness that's awful. probably meth heads :(.

what's the status of the death penalty in these parts?? some people are a waste of skin, and the perpetrators in this case are an example of such.

wow. just wow. I'm sorry sorry to read this happened. If you're reading this, please take good care of yourself and heal quickly. Prayers.

That really sucks. Really sorry, dude! I'm especially angry about the prosciutto and the cake, and the leg bones (of course). Speedy mending to you. I hope that they catch the fuckers soon.

Wow, practically underneath my window. Surprised if only because that's not exactly a quiet, poorly trafficked intersection and there's a police station just up the street on Vallejo (though I never see cops on foot except on Broadway and Columbus outside the bars or sometimes along Grant).

Wish I could help, but I didn't hear or see anything suspicious that night from my perch between Columbus and Powell. My best to the victims, hope things turn out alright.

We were celebrating the inauguration a few blocks away when this happened. Shocking, disgusting, and repulsive.

Healing vibes for the victim.

I'm sorry to hear about your incident. On December 17th of this past holiday season, my six foot tall boyfriend and I were brutally attacked on the corner of Divis and Francisco (marina residential neighborhood). I am a tall athletic girl and he's no slouch. Two street punk looking guys in black hoodies (caucasian) came running out of a doorway and I turned when I felt they were coming too fast/too close and they punched me in the nose, breaking it. They attacked both of us until we essentially knocked the wind out of one and he beat up the other when the adrenaline kicked in. At this point, a third one came out of nowhere with brass knuckles and hit my boyfriend in the face. THEN they asked for money. They took the cash from his wallet (didn't take my purse) and ran when they lost the element of surprise. I honestly think it was a gang initiation targeted at 'marina' folks (ironically neither of us live there). After the emergency room, we filed a police report that they never opened up into being a case so when I called to follow up, they said they didn't think anyone by the same description had attacked anyone else. In telling many of our friends to be careful, it came up that this happens quite often in 'safe' neighborhoods and there is a big effort to hide the information to keep commerce going in the area. I carry pepper spray, wear flats and take cabs from door to door after dark now. Be careful out there. This happens way more often than people realize. Be vigilant regardless of your size or the neighborhood you're in. Good luck finding the A-holes that did this to you. I've heard there is a new gang on Divis that is holding initiations in 'safe' neighborhoods.

Hey Jeja, so sorry to read that happened to you. That's horrible. From my own experience with SFPD, most everything is handled in this way, not just the ones that might help merchants. Normally I have nothing but decent things to say about SFPD, they tend to be pretty cool--for cops, that is. But as far as administrative work, *anything* that isn't high-profile or going to cost the city big bucks to defend or prosecute, is entirely and completely ignored.

they're cool in terms of not being assholes, but in terms of fighting crime (their job) they suck.

PS The third person that attacked us was a girl, also caucasian.

How terrible.

Those benches in Washington Square Park along Union, especially close to Stockton where it's not quite as well-lit, seem to attract a certain element of loiterers on weeknights. I've never had any direct problems other than a tingly sense that walking near that group would be unwise, and so I tend to stick to the south side of Union when walking in that area. I would not be at all surprised if they were a part of what happened, or at least saw it happen.

Get better soon, commenter. That totally sucks. I hope they catch the people that did this.

North Beach is getting more dangerous all the time. My ex and her bf were attacked and mugged on Kearny near Green last year. They caught the guys - all juveniles from Fairfield, of all places. And someone else I know was mugged outside Amante on Green at around 1:30 am. Be careful out there.

These days when I walk about my city I have my hand in my pocket holding my pistol. My other pocket has a nice little blackjack for light work. I've had a gun pointed at my face before and if I am going to go down I'm going down swinging. Fuck those assholes.

My hand is in my pocket holding my pistol right now.

Ha Ha good one withak, just don't let that thing go off or you'll have a big mess to clean up.

Tuesday morning a little after 8am my wife and I got on the T just as two guys ran off who had just put a teenager in a choke hold and stole his iPod. The kid got off the next stop before I even figured out what happened. Nobody present even thought to call the cops.

The cops would have probably decided the kid assaulted himself, anyway.
