Still sniveling over losing the election, Republican leaders like House Minority Leader John Boehner are seriously suggesting opening up historical landmark Alcatraz as the new Guantanamo Bay. See, Obama (rightfully) closed down Gitmo, the Bush administration's favorite rape camp for prisoners of war, just after setting up shop in the Oval Office. A few Republican leaders were less than thrilled to see this alleged freedom-fighting detainment camp close down, then, rather wittily, suggested sticking the prisoners in the heart of the San Francisco Bay.
Supping a big bowl of sour grapes, Boehner told Meet the Press, "If liberals believe they ought to go, maybe we ought to open Alcatraz." Because a national park frequented by red state tourists is the best way to burn the liberal elite. However, San Francisco Democrat Nancy Pelosi provided some confustion, saying:
Perhaps he has not visited Alcatraz .. And let me say, Bill Young is a great member of Congress and I have a great deal of respect for his opinion. Alcatraz is a tourist attraction. It's a prison that is now sort of like a national park.
Robert Kennedy shut down Alcatraz as a federal prison in 1963.

This is so amusing. They don't want those "dangerous terrorists" in their backyard in Leavenworth. Woolsey should offer a trade - we'll house the Gitmo prisoners in San Quentin and in exchange they can house San Quentin's prisoners at Leavenworth. Chances are San Quentin's prisoners would be far more dangerous in the unlikely event of an escape, and if they don't escape they can't harm anyone. But we'd probably qualify for more federal funding to run San Gitmo as a terrorist prison.
San Quentin would be just fine. They could learn old Johnny Cash songs as they await their war crimes court martials.
Correction, courts-martial.
Alcatraz would make a great casino.
whew. i sure am glad democrats never snivel after losing elections.
I've lost the ability to distinguish between serious policy proposals and internet trolls.
It's neither: it's a real-life troll. Rarer but much more dangerous. You see, tens of thousands of people actually vote to keep this guy in office every two years.
It sounds like that guy knows that Alcatraz is a tourist trap, Pelosi needs to adjust her sarcasm detector.
This is just another failed attempt at Republican humor. You know, like "Bomb, bomb, bomb. Bomb, bomb Iran." Ha.
You can't be impolite. I am sure that Pelosi and Feinstein's staff gave this proposal the 6 seconds of serious attention that it deserved.
We all know it was a bad joke on the Senators part, but...
Would GITMO been viewed in such a bad light had it been on US Soil, making it somewhat more "accessible. The issue for me about GITMO has always been how secret and detached it is from US and our laws. Dont get me wrong, GITMO is pretty messed up with some of the people they have held their not really belonging their, at the same time some of the reports I felt have been, dare i say, trumped up charges because of how isolated it it.
I guess what I am trying to hint at is having local detainment facilities is a lot better then having some overseas or worst with other nations.
No, it would not be as bad. Maybe almost as bad, but we'll never know that. The biggest problem with GTMO has been that its remote location has been used as an excuse to deny due process to the inmates as would be required if the prisoners had been transported inside the US border.
I'm all for it. Put a net around it and put some sharks in there, too. With laser beams. It'll be all good.
That would be great...until the wise sharks take control of and then use the lasers against the poor souls in the Marina.
It's not "sort of like" a national park, it IS a national park. Shouldn't our representative know that?
