Actually, my brother was in a plane crash (small plane) and almost died a few years back. Once he was recovered, he was flying again. I bet many of the passengers will be flying within the next few days even. I've been a passenger in a major car crash and it never stopped me from getting in a car again.

That pilot walked the aisle twice after ditching to check for passengers and was last out of the plane. A true action hero. In the face of endless bad news of late, this story and that remarkable pilot are a real breath of fresh air. We in the Bay Area can all be very proud of this fine professional.

Some are calling for a parade in the Chron comments and I agree. Would be nice, for a change, to see people take to the streets here for something positive.

If a plane ended up in the Bay like that, I wonder how long it would take ferries/rescue boats to show up (probably somewhat longer... plus the Bay is a heck of a lot more shallow, so maybe a really long time).

And as for a plane ditching in the ocean after taking off, that would be a heck of a lot more scary.

Sullenberger's wife told CNN that she was stunned to hear the news from her husband after it was all over.

"I hadn't been watching the news. I've heard Sully say to people, 'It's rare for an airline pilot to have an incident in their career,' " said Lori Sullenberger of Danville, California.

"When he called me he said, 'There's been an accident.' At first I thought it was something minor, but then he told me the circumstances and my body started shaking and I rushed to get our daughters out of school."

US Airways said all 155 passengers and crew are alive and safely off the plane

Yeah, amazing job by the pilot for sure. It must be pretty surreal to have to land a plane on the surface of the water as opposed to, you know, on a runway.

And all the passengers, while not injured, will never fly again.

This is crazy and it's also one of those small world moments for me ... Thanks to Facebook and Twitter I found out that three old coworkers and one current coworker are all safe and sound (with everyone else as well).

The pilot did an amazing job saving the plane.

The pilot as from Danville, CA, FYI. It sounds like he did a pretty good job saving the plane from total failure.

What's a news story without the perfunctory Bay Area connection? It appears as though the hero pilot of 1549 is from Danville.
