Oh joy. President Obama plans on repealing that childish "don't ask, don't tell" policy that has prevented lesbians and straight-acting/-appearing queer men from serving openly in the U.S. military. "Don't ask don't tell"s genius, enacted by the Clinton administration, lies within the idea that military folk should censor answers or declarations of their sexuality. And who's to blame for this jarring acceptance of homosexuality within the military? Will & Grace, claimed sociologist Melissa Embser-Herbert, author of The U.S. Military's 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' Policy: A Reference Handbook. "It's the Will and Grace generation," she told the Chronicle. "They've grown up seeing gay people on TV and having friends in 10th-grade come out."

Buuuuut seriously... I would actually argue that Don't Ask Don't Tell has been a huge success. In Johnny Symons' amazing documentary on the topic, it's pointed out that in '93 when this policy was enacted the support among active US military for gays serving openly was less than 10%. Whereas now, I forget the specific numbers he cites, but it's north of 70% support among active military for gays serving. That's a huge change, no? Are we sure DADT did not facilitate this enormous change in opinion?
That said, I believe no one on earth agrees with me in this conclusion.

At best this is a compromise.
He's against gay marriage which should piss gay people off. And the Rick Warren thing should also piss gay people off.
He'll be needing a lot of troops for the wars he plans to continue/make bigger in Iran and Afghanistan and who knows where else, so repealing Don't ask Don't tell is an excellent option for him...it's killing two birds with one stone.
it's also popular: 75% of the population now supports gays in the military. still, it's not something El Bush would ever dare to do.
