Dang, that was my #1 source for new books, and I really liked the store. Did the landlord increase the rent beyond feasibility? As somebody has already pointed out, Alexander Book Company is also a great store and it's right around the corner -- it's where I tended to go after Stacey's. The newsstand wasn't as extensive, instead they have huge areas devoted to African-American studies and visual arts. Good things both. Time to bump Alexander up to #1.

Books Inc. is indeed awesome. Clean Well Lighted Books had too much attitude. Too bad about Stacey's, though. I was just thinking of going there, in fact.

Books Inc. is great! They took over for A Clean, Well-Lighted Place on Van Ness and I try to go there anytime I buy a book. There's also one on Market in the Castro. Book-lovers should support them. The staff is really helpful and very nice.

that's too bad -- although this employee seems kind of unreasonably and annoying. at least they're Stacey's is letting them know 3 months in advance. I'd be grateful for ANY severance package working in retail.

I walked by that place at least every other Sunday and throught, "Hey, local bookstore!" And then remembered that they were closed. Farewell, place-that-was-never-open-when-people-who-buy-books-have-free-time!

What a shame. I came here more when I worked downtown but I still do quite a bit of shopping at Stacey's. It's a sad turn of events and a bit of a surprise... As they are so visible and well-placed on Market and I'd think it would be quite the destination for book lovers on a lunch break. Terrible.

Good riddance - I found the employees to be unhelpful, rude, even nasty... And they didn't seem to care for books very much. I assume the quote in the post was from an employee and it perfectly demonstrates the put-upon, holier-than-thou attitude they served up to customers. And that's why I've been shopping at Books Inc. since I gave up on Stacey's years ago...
