Regardless what you think about print publishing, Stacey's Books was a favorite. (Its foreign Vogue section alone seemed endless!) So after months of guessing when it will close its doors, Stacey's finally told its employees today that they will close shop sometime in March. A source in Stacey's corporate sales tells us:
Venerable Stacey's Books, after celebrating 85 years in business this last fall, announced to staff today that the store will close sometime in late March.
Our condolences, Stacey's employees.

Week Around the Ists

You read? Books, I mean.
Yes.
Not all of us are Borg yet.
Crap. Crappity crap crap crap.
Super Crap
Mega crap.
Where will I spend my lunch hour and spend my paycheck now?
Good riddance - I found the employees to be unhelpful, rude, even nasty... And they didn't seem to care for books very much.
I assume the quote in the post was from an employee and it perfectly demonstrates the put-upon, holier-than-thou attitude they served up to customers.
And that's why I've been shopping at Books Inc. since I gave up on Stacey's years ago...
Books Inc. is great! They took over for A Clean, Well-Lighted Place on Van Ness and I try to go there anytime I buy a book. There's also one on Market in the Castro. Book-lovers should support them. The staff is really helpful and very nice.
Books Inc. is indeed awesome. Clean Well Lighted Books had too much attitude.
Too bad about Stacey's, though. I was just thinking of going there, in fact.
They had a good remainder selection in the basement...I'll miss that.
What a shame. I came here more when I worked downtown but I still do quite a bit of shopping at Stacey's. It's a sad turn of events and a bit of a surprise... As they are so visible and well-placed on Market and I'd think it would be quite the destination for book lovers on a lunch break. Terrible.
I walked by that place at least every other Sunday and throught, "Hey, local bookstore!" And then remembered that they were closed.
Farewell, place-that-was-never-open-when-people-who-buy-books-have-free-time!
Oh no! :-(
This reminds me, did that architectural bookstore, the one up on jackson and montgomery, or thereabouts by Belli's old office, is it still open?
That architectural bookstore (William Stout?) is indeed still open.
*happy dance*
TO DO before march:
use that stacey's gift certificate...
And I just placed a pre-paid pick-up order last night! I'll miss Stacey's. Its staff are much more helpful than the Borders staff downtown.
Yeah, at times Borders can be like the Fry's of literature.
I like Stacey's a lot. This is sad. Thankfully, I also like Alexander books on 2nd between Market and Mission. With any luck they'll stay open.
What ! That's awful news. :(
that's too bad -- although this employee seems kind of unreasonably and annoying. at least they're Stacey's is letting them know 3 months in advance. I'd be grateful for ANY severance package working in retail.
hahahaha i love typos.
LET THE THEFTERY BEGIN!
Dang, that was my #1 source for new books, and I really liked the store. Did the landlord increase the rent beyond feasibility?
As somebody has already pointed out, Alexander Book Company is also a great store and it's right around the corner -- it's where I tended to go after Stacey's. The newsstand wasn't as extensive, instead they have huge areas devoted to African-American studies and visual arts. Good things both. Time to bump Alexander up to #1.
Their Palo Alto location closed a decade ago, so this is hardly a surprise. Still, sad news.
Triple Crap! And yet, the wrapping paper store at the Westfield mall survives...
Shit, I think I still have my Literary License card from the Palo Alto Stacey's somewhere.
That's too bad ... great spot to meet/hear authors.
Yeah, I saw David Sedaris there about 5 years ago.
