Oh oh. Here we go again. An angry, misguided soul defaced another symbol of religion, this time the Castro's Most Holy Redeemer Church Catholic at 100 Diamond Street The church was spray-painted with swastikas over the weekend. And once again, Newsom is none too thrilled about it, releasing this statement: "We strongly condemn the vandalism of the Most Holy Redeemer Catholic Church. It was a cowardly and criminal act. San Francisco is a city that embraces people of all faiths. To intimidate a community and threaten a place of worship with intolerance is contrary to everything the City of St. Francis represents."

Week Around the Ists

That this post garnered no comments is the real crime.
Because this was directed at the Castro church and not the archdiocese's office (1 Peter Yorke Way, kids), I vote this was done by the tools of Yes on 8.
i'm still trying to deal with it. on the one hand, its my parish, and I am outraged that someone would deface a community that has fought TIRELESSLY for equality, within and without the church. On the other hand, I understand the frustration and only hope that those people who did this find the courage to come out and speak face to face with others, because it is through dialogue that real change will occur.
I am also pissed at everyone on SFGATE who is saying that MHR is full of idiots because they still follow the church. I hate when people forget that the church is the people, not the buildings or the leaders. The catholic faith is one of love, its the institution that still needs to find that harmony. MHR is a beacon because there are many who feel that they are still catholics even though they do not agree with the leaders, because being a catholic is more about your relationship with god, how you practice that relationship, and how you interact with others, than who is running things in the Vatican.
I don't know, I'm not being incredibly eloquent. I'm hurt, tired, and yet even more determined to reach out across the isle. I hope others can see acts like this and come together as well.
I am sorry your church was vandalized, it was unnecessary and inappropriate.
However, regarding the people and the institution -- within those walls the institution is the Archdiocese of San Francisco, and it is spoken for by Archbishop Niederauer, who is in turn (eventually) spoken for by Pope Benedict. You must understand that you are part of this institution and that you allow such individuals to speak on your behalf.
