in all fairness California has PLENTY of rednecks in the San Joaquin Valley and in the Emerald Triangle. So don't fool yourself that they are only exclusive to the South.

1. at least if he names his kid robert e lee or jefferson davis, shop-rite will (probably) put it on a cake. 2. back in the '70s, I was trying to convince people to make the ol' stars & bars the gay rights flag. If that had happened, rednecks probably wouldn't be waving it around so much.

bluefairlane: but he isn't being judged by the way he looks. he is being judged by the loaded term he proudly displays on his back! there's a difference. there's definitely a lot of hypocrisy in the gay community (i'm immune, of COURSE), though. i know of some people who feel suffocated whenever we go to a non-gay bar. it's kind of silly.

I grew up in a very rural part of a very redneck state, and no one I knew would have ever taken pride in this term. It was considered a slur against poor, rural people. I would have been mortified if someone had called me this. However, it now seems that some people are "reclaiming" it as a point of pride. I don't think it necessarily has anything to do with racism.

@travin: Maybe he's not bothered by being racist, but I think it's more likely that he feels that he's not racist and redneck culture doesn't necessarily include racism. And, lets be honest, people like us are going to call and think of him as racist no matter what he does, so I think it's less a matter of lack a forethought as he just doesn't give a fuck what we think.

My brother is a very prideful redneck. He is also an embarrassment to the family, which was supposed to be my role as "the gay one." But in the game of Life, when WASPs are the players, redneck trumps gay almost every time.

really? i used to live in the south and i remember a time when rednecks wouldn't use that term to describe themselves, or they would get extremely offended if you called them "rednecks." now they proudly wear it on their sleeves and backs.
