Sunnyvale Councilman/Former Mayor Leaves for Iraq

On Dec. 29, U.S. Navy reservist/attorney/councilman Otto Lee, 41, will start a trepidatious, sourjourn deployment in Iraq. The Sunnyvale representative and father of two received his deployment orders three weeks ago, which means the Lee family has had to put Christmas on pause until his return. Lee is a UC-Berkeley graduate (with degrees in chemical and nuclear engineering) and holds a law degree from UC Hastings. He has been with the Sunnyvale City Council for five years. We wish him a safe return.

A politician going on active duty? Was that a unicorn I just saw?

Typo: he's a Sunnyvale, not San Francisco, councilman...not that San Francisco has a city council...

Nothing says "I love my kids" like putting yourself in a position to make them orphans.

I'm confused... are we supposed to feel sorry for him? He signed up, on his own, to be in the reserve.... which means, since W decided to play war, that he's going to have to go on active duty, like every other active & reservist..... so while it's sad that he has to leave his family, it was his choice to join the group!

Fun Fact: he is also a partner at The Intellectual Property Law Group; ironically, an IP firm with an incredibly generic name.

@bluecanary: i don't think he had any choice.

this isn't so bad. with all his education he'll be out of harms way, not rolling around on a hummer waiting for an IED to paint the town red.
