Oh, Gavin.
You know on some level we love Newsom. But we suspect deep down he doesn't like being in politics. So it always bums us out when he makes the call for donations. Take, for example, the email we received today ("We all know California must do better" reads the subject line) where team Newsom tells us that after "reaching out to policy experts and community leaders throughout California" to see what needs to get done for the entire state, he's been "personally touched and encouraged by the tremendous response" he's received.
What we do not understand about Gavin Newsom is why he keeps running for things when he clearly doesn't want the job -- he clearly hates being the mayor of provincial San Francisco, and he would clearly hate being the governor. It seems all he wants to do is go to parties and shout about gay marriage! (That is to say, holy moley, Newsom is just like us!) Instead, why not just become the head of the HRC? That's a role where he wouldn't have to do a thing but go to fancy parties, make sure his name is on a the best swag bag, and pretend to have a concerned look on his face.
That said, we'll do your bidding, Newsom: To make "the most generous donation you can afford" to Newsom's exploratory committee for governor, go here. We would donate -- because, whether you like it or not, we would loooove to see a San Franciscan in Sacramento. you know, for kicks -- but all of our income goes to barely living in SF.
Update: Newsom has collected $600,000 so far for exploratory purposes.

I thought part of the deal of letting the rich buy their way into office is that we don't have pony up for their campaign costs.
I'm sorry Gavin, I know its Christmas and all, and while I would LOOOOOVE to make a donation to your exploratory committee for further Newsom aggrandizement, I think I might spend some money this year making a donation to one of those social service programs helping the sick and the poor.
You know, one of those programs who's budgets you axed instead of...I don't know, telling the Symphony or the Ballet with their $500,000 a year administrators to go take a hike or maybe trimming back on the SFPD & SFFD's bloated salary packages? You know, those two city departments that account for probably 80% of the city staff that earn over $100,000 a year?
So, yeah, maybe I'll just make a donation to help support agencies proving help to poor schizophrenics living on the streets instead of your fancy "Make Me Governor, dammitt!" parties.
Not one fucking nickel.
Gavin Newsom & Chelsea Clinton in 2016!
NOT!
Fire the campaign manager. This playbook is awkward, predictable, and tired. It's killing your campaign before it has even started.
Would Gavin be a terrible governor? I mean, I know he sucks as a mayor and SF ought to be able to do a lot better... but the governor obviously has to be more centrist than a mayor of SF (should be). Mightn't he be a reasonable choice?
I'm just thinking out loud. I'm not really sure either way. I'm definitely not giving him any money, though.
Seriously, with the budget crunch we have there is no justification for any city employee earning over $100,000 a year. I'd even go so far as to say that's too much, but let's do this slowly at least. Even if it doesn't help that much it's a nice gesture. It shows that we actually care more about trying to run the damn city than pay out inflated salaries to the people who are doing such a terrible job of running it effectively.
you raise a good point, plumby. for a city hellbent on coming across as leftist, he might be better suited for sacramento. that is, if he had more drive for politics than the spotlight -- a sentiment that goes for more than half the board of supes too.
I'm mesmerized by that photo.
Ask the Getty's,Farese's, Abbasi's and Danielle Steel for that kind of cash.
Personally touched? Like he was when he realized that there is a place called Third Street in this town? Anyone else remember how he dragged the Chron and a bunch of department heads down to the lower east side of SF and blathered about how things were gonna change? These freaky coke-fueled binges of energy have to stop.
Are you f@%king kidding me? Yes we need to do more feeding the poor, sheltering the homeless, funding for our schools but give money to Newsom for Governor? Hell No!
California CAN do better - than HIM. Gavin Newsom doesn't have an ice cube's chance in hell of ever being elected governor of the Great State of California, so any donation made to his campaign is a total waste of American dollars. Now that we live in Lay Away 2.0, I'm not sure it's such a wise thing, throwing away money like that.
Also, head of HRC? Don't you have to be a gay to run that particular organization? Handing the reigns over to Newsom would be like hiring on Cindy Sheman to be leader of the NAACP.
He should quit politics and either become:
a.) an actor like that insufferable wife of his they can use her GrrrlPower Productions Company, or whatever it's called, infused with Getty dough, to throw together a few star making vehicles for the gruesome twosome); or,
b.) a layabout jetsetter wastrel on the French Riviera, perpetually recovering from hangovers, stretched out on chaise lounges out by the pool, while being waited upon by his staff of non-Anglophone, Asian women in bikinis.
It's your choice, Gavin. Just make one.
What was it that Gavin said the other night on the MSNBC lesbian show...you know what I mean...the Olberwomann progam...
Something about Rick Warren and Obama...
"'The politics of this are lousy for President-elect Barack Obama,' Newsom said. 'But again, he is someone that said he was going to reach across the divide and try to bring us together. And if he can do that in a way that sparks a dialogue and a substantive one at that, where we can begin to understand one another and begin to address our differences in a meaningful way, then maybe it's an opportunity.'"
http://briefingroom.thehill.com/2008/12/19/newsom-calls-warren-invocation-an-opportunity/
In other words: "I'm a Democrat that wants to be Governor of CA and like Obama, I can use big words (ie: substantive and opportunity) that make it acceptable for me to suck up to bigots...especially if they help me win an election!"
Hey Gav - ask your buddy Rick for some cash.
@LisaLives: Well it is an interesting photo. That bust should be on top of an 2500 year old, aging marble statue, with an appropriately small pee-pee attached, just like any other Greek statue.
If Newsom wins the Governor's seat here I would support a trade of Newsom for Blago, straight up.
GrrrlPower Productions Company
ha! that made my year, TAYM.
He's be a terrible governor, just as he's been a bad mayor. A good governor makes decisions about stuff, including hard decisions.
The Governator's problem (ok, one of many) is he can't get a budget passed. He's not able to ram it down the GOP's throats. Gavin can't get anything done here, how could he get anything done in Sacramento?
Oh, and I also second everything everone said about cutting city employee salaries, the ballet, etc. etc. etc. For a city with a huge budget problem, we sure waste a lot of money.
is he enjoying the aroma of that fart or what
gavin's chances of becoming governor, like that of any mayor of san francisco is nil.
his opponents should send a team of kids with camcorders to ride MUNI for a day. Then send them around town just showing all the half-done showboaty things the Mayor's made headlines, but not headway, with.
then see how he tries to talk his way around the fact that he allowed illegal immigrants a free pass out of jail when they committed violent felonies (like 3x homicides) and an out of control crime problem and an abysmal record solving said homicides when he's running around the Central Valley or LA.
Yeah, THAT'll work.
I just went to empty my spam folder in my Yahoo email account and saw the Gavin email for contributions.
Apparently the spam filter is working just fine.
Gavin Newsom, coming soon to a bar near you!
I live out in the 'burbs. Who is this guy you're talking about? Wasn't he the guy in all those Yes-On-8 ads?
Oh Gavin we're done with ya! You have made too many messes we have to clean up and that photo shows your TRUE sexual orientation. See ya on a float down Castro next year.
P.S The food at Balboa is nasty!
