I thought about this scenario, and it is plausible that when he forced the doors open, he was hanging onto the floor of the actual elevator. Instead of dropping down and out to the floor, he may have swung below the elevator, and thus plunged to his death. This makes sense if he was hanging onto the floor of the elevator in the only way possible: palms down, fingers pointing inward so that his toes were pointing back to the empty shaft.

Personally, I don't doubt that it was anything other than a tragic accident. However, it is rather odd that there is a large enough gap between the elevator car doors and the shaft itself for someone to fall straight through. I know it's an old building, but still...so I too am hopping on the task force bandwagon, though I think it should be from an OSHA perspective, not so much the hate crime angle.

I'm with Blue on this one. Indeed, the same geniuses who ignored a dead body in a van and let the 2 murder suspects skip off to Mexico only to be brought home by an industrious civilian. I'm not wearing my tin foil hat today, but I think a wee bit more investigation may be in order.

um, where's the source of this news? The leadline of the last (and only) Chronicle article linked is "Police think activist was trapped in elevator." I like wild speculation as much as the next guy, but still.

Aren't these the same geniuses who claimed the guy in Hayes Valley stabbed himself to death whilst causing a commotion overheard by neighbors, then disposed of the knife before bleeding to death, thus causing French authorities to intervene? I think a task force is definitely in order.

great, more of the people that should be working on the violence going on in this city have just been pulled to work on another highly improbable case. I say we forgo dealing with the highly improbable homicides until we put those away responsible for the highly probable murders.
