Foodie is really the current pop-culture version of the word "gourmet," and yes, it describes a person who has a deeper interest/knowledge in food vis-a-vis the average person (who may be perfect content eating McDonald's and Lean Cuisines). Hobbyist, aficionado, and connoisseur are all synonyms in this case. For whatever reason, the term "gourmet" has seemingly fallen out of favor in the past few years.

As a former waitress, I couldn't care less how clean the restaurant is. Believe me, you're taking a risk every time you go out to eat. Crap service? Bad/overpriced food? THAT I want to know about. Thanks Yelp.
