I hate people who don't clean up after their dogs.

@bluecanary - Agreed! Plus as a dog owner it just makes all of us look bad.

So do I. Daily I must dodge turds as I walk the sidewalks of San Francisco. It's not just an eyesore, it's a health hazard. In my neighborhood I blame the homeless youth, all of whom have dogs. I have to ask if they're incapable of picking up after their animals, when was the last time they bothered to take them to a vet for shots, etc? We need legislation to ban anyone who lacks a permanent address from owning a dog. It'll scare these "gutter punk" youths away from the city, keep our sidewalks turd free, and protect the well being and health of all dogs in the city. This isn't cruelty, just sound public policy.

Those probably aren't dog turds on the sidewalk.

@TAYM, don't count on a ban any time soon. The SF SPCA just amended their adoption policies, no longer do you need to provide proof of...well, pretty much ANYTHING to adopt. If you have an ID and the money, you can get a pet.

Previously, they required an executed lease stating animals were permitted at the residence (meaning you HAD a residence). For some reason, the new Director (booo!) removed this policy. Ridiculous.

Why hasn't Heather Fong done anything about this? No press conference from the Mayor?

It was never like this before. I am very concerned.

TAYM, while we're at it we should mandate that they must wear shoes at all times or face a $300 fine. It doesn't matter if they can't afford the comfort and utility of shoes. They'll just have to motivate and find a way. Considering all the poop, broken glass and the funds for free clinic hours that go into trying to keep homeless healthy, a stiff fine will scare these gutter punk youths away from the city and save funds for the more deserving. It isn't cruelty, just sound public policy.

</sarcasm off>

I needed to leave a note for the dog owner who left their dog's turd in the apex of my turn the other day, I almost wiped out on that pile of stinking excrement.

There are actually veterinarians who donate time to making sure the homeless' pets are taken care of, shots-wise.

For a lot of these people, their pet is the only friend they have. I have seen the homeless take care of their pets in rainstorms by holding their own coats over the dogs, while they sat there in t-shirts.

I don't like dodging dog shit, and I pick up more than my share of it, but I would never, ever suggest taking pets away from the homeless. For what? So the dog can be euthanized or stuck in some crowded shelter?

Besides, I see homeless in the park with their dogs and I see yuppies in the park with their dogs. Which group do YOU think I've most often seen ignore their dogs' shit?

I'm guessing it was the homeless, not the yuppies.

Please, homeless dog owners are a small fraction of the offenders! I've watched well-dressed ladies and gentlemen keep right on walking while the rest of us dodge the freshly-steaming pile.

For the record, SF Municipal Code ARTICLE 1, SEC. 40:

DOG TO BE CONTROLLED SO AS NOT TO COMMIT NUISANCES.

(a) It shall be unlawful for any person owning or having control or custody of any dog to permit the animal to defecate upon the public property of this City or upon the private property of another unless the person immediately remove the feces and properly dispose of it; provided, however, that nothing herein contained authorizes such person to enter upon the private property of another without permission.

(b) It shall be unlawful for any person to walk a dog on public property of this City or upon the private property of another without carrying at all times a suitable container or other suitable instrument for the removal and disposal of dog feces.

(c) Visually handicapped persons who use Seeing Eye Guide Dogs are exempt from this law.

Travin:

a.) Your analogy is flawed. A housed human such as yourself is unlikely to pick up some kind of fatal disease from the nearest passing barefoot hippie. However, a rabid dog, unlike, say, a rabid hippie, is a threat to everyone and their canine companions. Protecting the welfare of dogs and the public at large is a bit different from forcing hippies to wear shoes to protect themselves from their hippie lifestyle. Nice try.

b.) Why do you hate dogs? Or, why do you love homeless youth more than dogs?

Bluecanary:

a.) I wasn't aware that there were vets who offered their services to the homeless free of charge. This is a good thing.

b.) The dog is the homeless person's only friend; therefore, we should disregard the well being of the dog who doesn't have a pot to piss in because ensuring that Betty the Bag Lady has a friend is more important than properly caring for an animal? Ok. I gotta ask - why do you hate dogs?

c.) If I ever saw a housed human disregarding his canine companion's droppings, I'd scream bloody murder and humiliate the hell out of him/her. Seriously, you should try it.

While I can appreciate all y'alls sympathy for the homeless in this town, I think y'all are failing to see the forest for all the hippies in trees. Any person who chooses to take responsibility for the well being of another creature, particularly a creature that is totally dependent upon them, should be damned well prepared to provide a particular level of care for that creature. This means providing adequate shelter, health care, and hygiene. Sorry, but homeless people are generally not able to do that. Therefore, they shouldn't be allowed to have dogs.

TAYM, I haven't at all indicated that I hate dogs or love homeless youth, so perhaps you're referring to another post.

And when you have the opportunity, please offer us some statistics from animal control supporting your conclusion that homeless people keep rabid dogs. I'm pretty confident that you just made that up as colorful rhetoric because overall your point [note my generosity] is rather, well, ridiculous.

The dogs I see with the homeless do not appear to be ill-treated. They seem to love their companions and be loved in return, and my keen insight into the mind of the canine tells me they would not want to be separated from their caretakers.

I too am thankful for the commentators at SFist!

Yay!

*sigh*

Travin, you make the kind of sense that doesn't. You and bluecanary are allowing your undying love for homeless youth to over power all common sense when it comes to the care and maintenance of dogs (not to mention keeping the sidewalks of this once great city free of turds). Your combined hatred of man's best friend will not stand. Sorry for you.

TAYM, it's interesting that you say all that because growing up I and my family were dog breeders.

Time to check your baggage, they charge extra these days.

Travin, the fact that you were raised in a puppy mill is all the proof we need that you hate animals! I think I may have to report you to PETA or the SPCAA or the NARP so they can send over some lesbians to your house to forcibly take away your pet dog/cat/goldfish/canary and deliver them into the arms of real animal lovers, not some random pet store owner from a mall like yourself.

There was a great comment on another post a while back about a homeless dog. Not sure I'll nail it, but as I remember...

Seems this homeless man and woman were sitting outside a burger joint with their dog. A generous soul came out of said joint with two burgers and offered them to the couple. The couple accepted, and proceeded to feed one hamburger to their dog, while splitting the other between themselves.

Seriously? I start to tear up when I picture that.

Of course, I'm kind of a pussy.

Not sure how this relates, but since when is that a requirement for comment?

Kainoa, you tear up over that? I would never feed my dog a BITE of hamburger, let alone and ENTIRE one.

Christ.

TAYM clearly wins this one...sorry travin (but you still have the homeless and dog shit going for you)

Just edit the sign to say "YOU OR YOUR DOG."

What about the homeless shitting in the alleys of SOMA?

There should be a law or something against that too, no?

Homeless people can feed their dog a burger because they don't have to worry about his impending diarrhea problem messing up their house.

@TAYM: who said anything about homeless YOUTH? The homeless I see with dogs are generally around my dad's age, and they seem really responsible with their dogs. I have never, ever seen one of them not clean up after their dog.

As for the hamburger story, I remember that too, maybe it was on this site? But I do remember encountering the homeless man holding his coat over his dog in the pouring rain while he was clad only in a t-shirt. I too was teary eyed, and handed over every penny I had (and I never do that...anymore). This is the story I always think of when I hear people demanding that dogs be taken away from the homeless.

may the poop be with you
-
it was probably someone layed off from ILM, which is next door, people, times are tuffers.

Is there no room for the possibility that some unowned animal did this? Just sayin...

Blame the raccoons, everyone does.

@bluecanary: You are obviously very wise and avoid the Haight as much as possible. Here be nothing but gutter punks, their wannabe Maori tattooed faces lolling about in pools of their own vomit upon the pavement when they're not spacily asking you things like, "Hey rainbow brother, got a spare five dollars so I can get wasted on the drugs and alcohol?" Whole tribes of these folks move in and out of here like it's Grand Central Station. Each one of these fuckers has a dog and none of them picks up after their animals. Daily, I'm forced to endure a veritable cavalcade of dog turds just to get out of this downtrodden tourist trap of a neighborhood. All I want in this life are simple things, mang, like turd free sidewalks! Alas, that's just too much to ask for because homeless, drug addled teenagers have a God given right to wander the streets with their God damned dogs.

I moved out of the Haight for the reasons you describe. Nothing pisses me off worse than being panhandled by a kid with $600 worth of piercings/tattoos.

It's becoming like this on California St as well. It's like a shit minefield there at times. If anything i'd think they would want to clean it up simply because the cable car runs along cali and the tourists (aka FAR-IN-ERS) wanna spend money, not dodge shat.

Looks like all the good homeless/pet lines have been used, so I'll just relay my favorite sentence for when I visit the Haight: "Do I look like someone who has to buy pot off the street?"

@manys: That's a good one. I may have to borrow that line.

@poop: I hate seeing you smushed all over the sidewalk.
