How about how the police department vigorously fights foot patrols whenever someone tries to push them? This is not a city that can be patrolled from cars. It's simply too dense and too hard to drive around in. We need a police department that's more concerned with actually doing something than one that's concerned with passing the blame, deferring responsibility, and securing as high of a salary as possible.

This is the funniest part about the Examiner piece... see if you can make it all the way through without busting up laughing... "Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi, who serves on The City’s Public Safety Committee, said the unrelenting tide of killings must be stemmed. “It’s impossible to predict all homicides,” he said, “but there could be more vigorous levels of prevention and deterrence. I believe there is an absence of leadership on this issue, or we would not have seen such chronic numbers for five years. There has to be some admission that certain strategies just may not be working.”

The Horseshoe Pits are disgusting. This area of the park is really cool - virtually the only original natural habitat left in GG Park. But it's the home of the absolute worst of the worst of SF's "feral humans." This is one of the very few places in SF where I keep very alert when walking by myself. The only way to fix this is to FENCE THE AREA OFF in the name of "habitat restoration" or some other excuse and keep the subhuman TRASH out. It worked - however briefly - at Alvord Lake in the 90's. The SFPD will not do anything. Can you blame them? The moment they try they'll have the homeless enablers and other leftist trash all over them. The SFPD's morale is at an all time low and they've frankly given up on a populace that clearly doesn't give a shit about law and order.

this entire blog is sad. i was friends with Brandon back in high school in San Diego. he was one of the nicest (if not the nicest) people i knew. he was always the one to be friendly to strangers and could make anyone crack a smile. he wasnt a thug in the least bit and he was always one to break up a fight and make peace (despite being a boxer) im ashamed to be part of a society that can see a young man with a good heart die and make such light of it. i wouldnt have even bothered posting here because i actually feel bad for you all and pity your existence. but i feel i owe it to a great friend whose death has become fuel for poor jokes and sarcastic remarks by disturbing people like SquirrelMaster its amazing how people can make light of someones death when they dont know the person. but then when it's your friend or your family member you quiet down.

@SFBurke - There's a problem? Let the criminals kill each other. This way we don't have to shelter or feed them in jail. I'm pretty happy about this arrangement. Even better, dump them all on an island with a tv crew, whoever ends up alive at the end wins $100!

@What: Beets doesn't appear to have any concrete suggestions on how to fix the situation (which I will define as the rapidly rising murder rate in San Francisco), but then neither does Heather Fong. In Beets defense, s/he appears to be aware that there is a problem, unlike you know who. So all of that migh provide a hint as to where to start in fixing the problem. IMHO.

I read an article recently that the majority of people killed this year were already convicted criminals with extensive rap sheets. You're basing this information off of information given by the deceased's relatives. Who the hell is going to tell the press that their dead son is anything but a saint? Everybody lies. p.s. If you think SFPD does not need to be fixed, well then I hate to use the old slogan, but you're not paying attention. When I moved here there was the awesome game of "good block bad block." San Francisco doesn't necessarily have strict definitions of the safer areas. Yes, we can all agree that the Tenderloin/ Tender-Nob, Bayview, Civic Center and parts of SOMA and the Mission are "keep your wits about you" areas. But all this crime? Not localized. It's not just on the bad blocks, but most every block now. I know that sounds super alarmist, and I don't mean it to be. I'm just saying, shot in the back next to the Conservatory of Flowers? This should not be a "gee, that sucks" sort of moment. This should be a sign that things are changing in this city. Sorry. But this really got to me. . . obviously. . .

A 20 year old kid was shot in the back. He had moved here three weeks ago to get a fresh start. There is nothing to make light of here. I wish there was a line where the sarcasm and apathy would end and people would DO SHIT TO FIX THIS. It is pretty shitty and insensitive to dismiss him, whoever he was in life, as some "hooligan." Wrong time and place, most likely, so lets not go and try to somehow put the blame on him.
