A body was stuck in the Crunch Fitness/Academy of Art elevator on New Montgomerey over the weekend. Word is that the unidentified male or female died while trapped in the elevator.
We called Crunch on New Montgomerey this afternoon, and they confirmed that a body was, in fact, stuck in the elevator over the weekend, but wouldn't say whether or not he or she died. According to a reader, however, there was a medical examiners van parked outside today. They claim that it was a "dead body." Creepy
More info as it comes to us. (No MSM has picked up the story yet. If pressed, we'll be forced to go to Crunch Fitness -- something we promised we would never do.)
Update: Looks like it was, in fact, a dead body. And it was inside the elevator of the Sharon building. Cops and meds are still there as of 4:30 p.m.
Update II: The 5 o'clock news doesn't seem to be reporting it. At least it's not in their top-news-of-the-hour. Strange.
Update III: The body, found by a repair crew, was discovered at the bottom of the elevator shaft. "The unidentified victim apparently fell accidentally after summoning the elevator at 55 New Montgomery St. over the weekend," according to SFGate. The incident happened at 55 New Montgomery Street, not at the Academy of Art, which is just next door. (Though we're just sure the Academy is in on it. They're everywhere. They own SF.)

Week Around the Ists

Can I just say *crunch* and get it out of the way?
I really think it was across the alley from Crunch at the Acadamy of Art. That's where the ambulance was parked. (Medical examiner was down the street towards market)
This would never have happened at 24 Hour Fitness--they never close.
Now I have another reason to not go to the gym---I could die!
I don't understand how something like this could happen. Alarm button? Security guards? Phone?
Any bets if the surveillance video ends up on network television?
"afternooni" has a nice ring to it.
@travin
this would be the creepy-macabre version of the guy stuck in the elevator for 40 hrs?

Technically it isn't the Crunch elevator, it's the elevator of the Sharon building at 55 New Montgomery. There have been police and the medical examiner in the lobby most of the day; looks like they are finishing up now. Thanks for the post, no one here knew what was going on, just that one of the elevators was shut down...
Confirming mdeloura's comment. Crunch does not use/have access to the elevator in question, with the exception of some staff, though I have never seen them use it. It is an office building.
@boyonabike
This should be a slam-dunk negligent maintenance of property case.
Your geography is a mess. The Academy of Art University building is on the other side of Jesse from Crunch, where your map pin is (79 NM). Unless they have an elevator that crosses the street, you are way off base by lumping the two together.
You work out five times a week and then look what happens.
Yes, Quinn, the story is still coming into us. I'll update it shortly. And thanks for not being a total bitch about it too.
Crunch uses the freight elevator in the building.
Ruh Roh!
It's the House of Shield's Building.

As an Academy of Art alum, I heartily agree with the last part of your third update.
house of shields is at 39 not 55.
This building is an office building which holds lots of small businesses and random offices, in different suites:

I've been there before for a class at Pacific Arabic Resources (which is btw a great place to learn arabic).
they've posted more details:

Same guy perhaps?
(Yeah, I Google dead people. I'm a freak.)
Many of the offices in that building are therapists. Poor guy probably went to see his shrink that day.
SFGate quote from the building manager:
"Yeah, it's strange. You don't normally find bodies in the elevator shafts."
@setinherways:
yeah, same guy.
I knew this guy, we were classmates and although I didn't know him well (and disagreed with his politics) I can tell you that he was an incredibly smart, dedicated, lively and involved person who will be sorely missed. He was prominent in his community, a trusted physician and was a true citizen of the world. R.I.P. Dan.
