Let's speak freely here. I'm black, so I'll start. The black kids on the subway, on the bus, with the sagging pants and the super loud N word use are off the hook. Seriously. The only thing that PC cowardice earns anyone is the experience I had on the 38 L riding from Market to the Fillmore two days ago. Instead of black kids N wording and F bombing, this time, it was a group of Asian teens. My point is this - treat all bad behavior equally. As Barack himself said - brothers need to pull up their pants. It's common sense.

It's not just the "Oakland/Richmond" folks that make it that way, it's all the trash from the east bay, including Walnut Creek and Pleasanton, and to be honest, I'm not sure which area in the east bay is most annoying. It's a complete nightmare, and you're right, it's so strange how it's just that one strip. I feel sorry for any woman who has to walk anywhere near there.

I live a block away and am still amazed by how the "personnel" changes as the sun goes down- from locals and obnoxious tourists to oakland/richmond folks. that block and a half on broadway is the ghetto ass crack of an otherwise peaceful neighborhood.

The Chron is not paying much attention to the murder rate in SF -- much more focus on Oakland. Someone was murdered at 22nd and Valencia at 10:30 pm this Sunday and there was little coverage of it (an article on SFGate but I didn't see anything in the print edition). The police say that the incident was gang-related, but the location is unusual. That part of the Mission has lots of restaurant, cafe and night club activitiy -- not much drug dealing etc. Anyway, even if it was gang-related, it is a tragedy.
