While most of us who could afford an electric car are being handed pink slips, San Francisco and other Bay Area cities announced plans yesterday to make the Bay Ara the electric car capital of the world!
In partnership with a Palo Alto start-up called Better Place, whose plans is to coat the entire Bay Area with electric-vehicle charging stations by 2012, the idea is to make using and refueling electric vehicles as practical as gasoline cars.
In San Francisco, Mayor Gavin Newsom said the city will use tax breaks to promote sales of electric vehicles and encourage homes and businesses to make charging stations widely available. The city will also look at ways to speed up the permitting process to install charging outlets at homes and businesses.
Newsom says explains, "I don't believe halfway is good enough. I'm a guy driving a hybrid (vehicle) and I don't feel too good about that. For us to get to the next level, we need unprecedented regional collaboration."
While Better Place has already proven successful in quainter places like Israel, Denmark and Australia, this system will be the first of its kind in the United States. Oh, and Bay Area environmental leaders are saying that a $1 billion investment is necessary to get the whole thing up and running.

Hey, no problem, though it had better not be $1B of our Bay Area tax dollars paying for this, just to power a few Teslas.
But if I were an Oakland resident I would be mighty pissed. Ron Dellums should be focusing on that city's out of control crime problem, not doing plug in hybrid photo ops.
Do you think a billion dollars would be enough to solve the homeless crisis?
The men in this photo (including Gavin) all have stunningly good haircuts. Even the balding guy looks good.
Shai Agassi was up to be CEO of SAP but was forced out because so many of his understaff claimed he was arrogant and sold their ideas as his own. The guy is a salesman who gets everybody amped up and does not always deliver. People that have worked a Better Place thought there was lots of hot air and no substance. The guy does not have any patents and is claiming other people's intellectual property for which he has not paid any licensing fees. SAP may even come after him for using derivatives of their code. He is not to be trusted. His Isreal project has already become full of holes.
Any relation to Andre? Does he also have that stubbly bald look?
Whoo hoo! Another press event by our mayor.
Sure glad that I don't have to actually do anything with respect to environment, energy dependence, peds getting mowed down by cars at a rate of 800/year. Those guys in suits are going to provide me with a zero emission vehicle (well, as long as you don't live in Hunter's Point where the electricity is generated) and I'll drive everywhere as always. Won't have to change a thing once I get an electric car! And I'm sure my neighbors won't mind if I park on the sidewalk once I get one of things since it will be so clean.
i think it's kind of silly that they want to put "charging stations" on the side of the street and at stop lights. wouldn't it make a lot more sense to add them to existing gas stations?
Gavin Newsom once drank a glass of water collected out of the tail pipe of a Hydrogen fueled car. This is how desperate he is to show the world that he's like a cutting edge, innovative, and totally in need of a higher office. Plus, his hair escaped from 90210. It should be captured and returned to Fox.
Gavin does have that "Wow, I could have had a V-8" look to him in the first pic.
Gavin's "hybrid" gets pathetic gas mileage. Not to mention the SFPD had to drive it to Montana and back. And we'll get to pay for more of that as he travels around the state with all that protection too!
Within one week of these charging stations being installed they'll be taken over by homeless people plugging in their radios and hotplates and camping out on the sidewalk on the public's dime. Nobody will actually use the chargers as it would require a confrontation with a group of homeless people.
Am I wrong?
Which one of them slapped Gavin just moments before the picture?
Homie, when was the last time you actually drove a car anywhere? PD drives you everywhere. I wonder how much oil his hair uses :)
if the big 3 would swap 25% of their companies for tesla intellectual property rights we may all be able to drive electric cars powered by the wind. built in factories that are powered by the sun. we will be drinking desalinated bottled water.
