Sean Penn Calls Prop 8 "Manslaughter"

As we all know, Gus Van Sant's film about Harvey Milk, Milk, will open next week. In 1977, Milk became the first openly gay man to be elected to a major public office in the United States, only to be assassinated within his first year of serving on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. At turns tragic and exhilarating, the film chronicles the last eight years of Milk’s life (played by Sean Penn), when he worked on campaigns for public office and the protection of gay employees.

Gothamist's Amanda Spurlock attended a press conference with Penn, Josh Brolin, James Franco, Alison Pill, and Emile Hirsch. Here's her report:

2008_11_seanp.jpgFranco revealed that he wanted to be a part of the film so badly that he would have “played the pool boy” just to be in it. But, thankfully, he plays Milk’s lover, giving the world a steamy Sean Penn and James Franco make out scene! $11 well spent!

Another tidbit: Van Sant (pictured) said they looked at hours of archival footage for developing the characters and maintaining historical accuracy. (In the film, you'll see snippets of "home movies" from The Hormel Gay and Lesbian Center's archive in San Francisco.)

Of course, it's impossible to overlook the fact that Milk, which opens Wednesday, is being released on the heels of the Prop 8 passage in California, the same state where Milk helped mobilize the gay community to demand their civil rights.

Speaking about Prop 8, Penn said, "It's only an issue because of ignorance in the first place. We don't have any excuse for being ignorant of the law...or ignorant of human history... In fact any support of Prop 8 would be minimally manslaughter. Because human history tells us that teenage boys are going to hang themselves out of a reach for an identity that they can't get.... And if this movie is a part of an engine to help reveal that, that's going to make us all happy and proud."

I so can't wait to see this!

James Franco was pretty hot in the movie. I didn't like Diego Luna's character. It's like they modeled that character after Fez from That 70s show. Why do the Latino characters always have to be airheads?!!?!

No dude, "I am Sam" felt more like manslaughter to my movie-going ass.

I know this is supposed to coincide with the shooting anniversary, but I'm curious how this would have affected the election had it been released one month early.

who will join me for a glass of milk during milk?

I'm bummed to have to skip this and wait for the DVD. I really can't bring myself to spend my money at a Cinemark theater after the CEO donated $10K to 'yes on 8'.

See it at the Castro Theatre, SF Joe.

Also Sean Penn is right. Despite the thrill of an Obama presidency I've been in a rather melancholy place since Prop 8 passed.

SFJoe, don't be so daft. See it in a non-Cinemark theater.

@fizzandpop: You are on fire today.

Also, I get to see it tonight. WOO HOO! Thank goodness for friends better connected than I.

i stood in line for an hour to catch the free "people's screening" of MILK. i liked it. i wasn't BLOWN AWAY, but sean penn definitely did an awesome job.

I loved the movie. I also saw it at the People's Preview. I thought it was tastefully done and VERY RELEVANT to today's culture wars and politics. It's amazing the similarities of 1978 and 2008.

I wasn't as blown away as I thought I would be, but I agree Sean Penn did an amazing job, and James Franco really surprised me. He should get a supporting actor nod come awards time, imo.
