30 years ago tomorrow, 900-plus men, women and children died after drinking a fatal cyanide-laced potion of Flavor-Aid (not Kool-Aid, as widely reported) at Jim Jones' compound in the jungles of Guyana. The infamous Peoples Temple in San Francisco, which originated in Indiana in the 1950s, prophesied an apocalypse that would result in some sort of magical socialist Eden on earth.
Alas.
Relocating to San Francisco in the late 1970s, the church moved to Jonestown, Guyana after the media figured out its leader, the allegedly alluring James Jones, was, well, insane.
Here are a few images looking back at the fateful day in 1978, featuring the sect during better days, Jackie Speier, inside the compound, and the aftermath.

That old church site on Geary is now your post office!
Thanks, Akit. I was trying to figure out what had happened to that building.
Rock and Roll, baby!!
Dr, Niles Crane was a follower?
I don't remember Jonestown, but I do remember the TV miniseries starring Sally Struthers as a whining cult member.
I still remember when Jackie Speier spoke to the graduating class of 2006 at SFSU's commencement. She talked about her experience at Jonestown.
Golly gee, you still remember a speech from two years ago? color me impressed, then, that must have been quite the speech, then.
