From what I hear a guy was shot in the leg, possibly by people from another out-of-control HOPE VI housing development. Based on the victim it sounds like a case of mistaken identity.

Again...so presumptious. I never thought moving to SF would be "cool". I got offered a job here and had the hopes it would be "cool". Instead, I find SF to be just "ok". And yes, I will be moving out of this apartment, out of this neighborhood and hopefully...out of this city towards greener pastures. I find it rather amusing that you're so disgruntled by my desire to have quality of life in the neighborhood and city I live in. You must be part of the reason why this city is just mediocre.

Maybe I need to fully think out the webcam idea. I feel safe here, but I also take some common sense precautions. If I have my drinking shoes on and do the Murios/Gold Cane/Page/NocNoc/Molotovs liver destruction tour, I will walk down Waller instead of Haight when I cross Fillmore. Maybe a detour down Germania St....love that street.

Chiming in: I live across from those projects on Page (heard the shots last night) and still feel like the hood is totally safe, but I don't however buy drugs, which makes me a lot more safe I would imagine. What makes me feel _less_ safe is the cop cars that patrol those projects 10 times a day. If anything reminds you you live in a rough and tumble place it's seeing a constant police presence. And since no arrests are EVER made, they will make themselves feel more important by ticketing your car.

I live along the panhandle and i noticed about 6 cop cars in the park around 8:30. Many stayed until after 11. Since this was before the shooting, it's unlikely that it was connected. Does anyone know what the action was in the panhandle? I have to agree - 've been in this apartment for over 4 years and it does seem to be getting much worse lately.

@MN Freckles - I think it might have to do with this bit: "provide more affordable housing for young professionals like me in better and safer neighborhoods." If you think you're paying too much, move to a different, safer 'hood and find some housemates. What you pay for a Jr. one-bed in the Haight will get you a big room in a nice place in any number of neighborhoods. You choose to live alone, and the amount of rent you likely pay makes you in my estimation, if not rich, more well-off than most. I've lived in the Lower Haight for some time, and I'm very sad about this. It's been so quiet for so long. Sigh.

GlenParker...I'm far from a yuppie and nor do I walk around with this "sense of entitlement" you speak of. I don't regret moving to SF, but after living here for almost 2 years, I still feel this city needs to clean up and take a cue from NYC. I do like the Lower Haight, but don't like gun shots, drug dealers and feeling scared. If I were a rich yuppie, I'd live in a rich yuppie neighborhood. I just think it makes sense to not charge an arm and a leg for housing that sits next to the projects. Oh well...was just voicing an opinion. Thanks for being a presumptious prick about it.

Think those cameras on Haight & Webster caught anything? That corner used to be terrible, with people selling pot to buy crack. I was so pleased when Mirkarimi got the cameras there but just so disappointed they aren't being used in the high-def setting they were designed for (currently 1 frame per 6 seconds?).

@CentralServices - be careful. If you're going to do something like that, make sure you know what you're going to do with the footage - you can check the archives of the lowerhaight.org discussion group (Google Groups: lowerhaightorg). The neighbors there are very involved and may have some advice. Arrests? No, no way. On the street, the word was that the perpetrators were in a black car and all wearing hoodies. That's not exactly information that can be worked with.

i've been living at haight and webster for 6 months, now, and it definitely does not suck. luckily, the gun violence seems to be infrequent ... and the cops have been cruising around. but, yeah, it's mostly the dude who rides his ridiculously loud motorcycle up and down the block a dozen times late at night causing regular disturbances. other than a few times when i thought i was about to get mugged by someone who started walking toward our apt from s&w as i was unlocking our gate it's been a colorful, diverse place to live. i'll take it over the marina any freakin' day.

Who cares about the gun shots, it's those damn mopeds and motorcycles that piss me off. The gun shots are once , maybe twice a month but those loud bikes are every day! (rant) haha, I love SF.

I live at Haight and Webster and yes, sometimes it does suck. The view out my front window is the S&W market which can be colorful at times...Same with Two Jacks, I mean wtf do they sell there? After being here for 6 years I love the neighborhood, just don't use the atm at S&W past 8pm. Maybe I should setup a webcam on the corner.

isn't that right at the housing projects? haight and webster has always been where the gun play in the LH goes down. no surprises, but still the LH feels super safe as long as you're not out there buying drugs next to the projects.

I live right on the corner and heard it all also, although i did not hear a car drive off. Saw some commotion and a few people ran into the s&w market. On Thursday night, there was a shooting at Hayes and Buchanan. I'm assuming this is retaliation?

I live right at Rose & Webster and heard the gun shots...first thinking (and hoping) they were fire crackers...but after the 3rd shot, it was apparent they were gun shots. I just moved to this hood...pay a ridiculous amount for a "JR" 1 bedroom, which sits right on street level and across from the housing project. After tonight...it's pretty much confirmed SF needs to do more about gun violence and provide more affordable housing for young professionals like me in better and safer neighborhoods. The quality of life here in SF is NOT up to par with how much it costs to live here. Instead of feeling safe in my own apt., I'm now going to wonder what the odds are of a stray bullet flying through my window.
