For the second time in two months, the San Francisco Holocaust Memorial in Lincoln Park was vandalized. With damages anywhere between $5,000 and $6,000, swastikas were marked on the bronze sculpture with pen. Most of the signage was removed, but a "specialized sculpture conservator will be brought in to fully restore the memorial."
Mayor Gavin Newsom had this to say about the recent memorial attack.
The Holocaust Memorial is a powerful symbol of the six million victims of the Holocaust. It is a monument that pledges its existence to "the creation of a world in which such evil and such apathy will not be tolerated."This act of hatred and intolerance reminds us of the need to carry that pledge forward. San Francisco is a city that embraces people of all faiths. We strongly condemn this despicable and cowardly act.
Sculptor George Segal's "The Holocaust" (1984) consists of 11 figures cast in bronze and painted white, imprisoned behind a barbed-wire fence. This week the Bay Area saw two incidents of public hatred toward religious groups: one where Trinity Presbyterian Church and Indonesian Christian Church were tagged with Stars of Davids and swastikas, another where a Noe Valley resident emblazoned his own house with a "Fuck Mormons" banner.

how is it an 'incidence of public hatred' if one person 'emblazoned his own house with a fuck mormons banner?' big difference between one person doing something to his private residence and people tagging churches.
A. 10 million people were exterminated during the Holocaust, approximately six million of whom were Jews. The remainder were Roma, special people, commies, anarchists, homos, and anyone else the Nazi Party found undesirable.
B. The Jews were not exterminated for their faith, per se. They were exterminated because they Nazis identified them as racially inferior - products of ethnic and cultural difference. Even people of Jewish ancestry who were converts to Christianity were killed off.
Gavin's lack of knowledge regarding world history is unacceptable. He should spend more evenings at home watching the Hitler Channel and less time hanging out with Trevor and Todd at the nearest Society photo op. Until he has corrected his ignorance, he should step down.
The "Fuck Mormons" signage that gay hung on his house is in NOT comparable to vandalism committed against Churches or Holocaust memorials. Those are direct acts of symbolic violence committed against particular people/institutions. The "Fuck Mormons" signage was in response to acts of political oppression committed by Mormons against the gays. How you could even compare the two is beyond me.
i can compare them because they are "two incidents of public hatred toward religious groups" that happened this week in the bay area. really, it's that simple.
but i thank you for the history lesson.
Ptsch! That history lesson wasn't for YOU, Brock! Stop being so self absorbed.
We'll have to agree to disagree on the "two incidents of public hatred toward religious groups." I will continue to maintain that vandalizing other's property with symbols intentionally chosen for their ability to express deep hatred is a far cry from "Fuck Mormons" which is less an expression of hatred for the LDS and more a condemnation of their actions outside the scope of their faith.
Since you put it on a public board, the history lesson is really for anyone who wants to read it, including Brock. I enjoyed it too, btw.
San Francisco has a Holocaust Memorial?!?
never forget!
T/F?
A sign reading "Fuck Mormon Dogma" is an incident of public hatred toward a religious group.
Then explain.
have you seen one? if so, send it in.
Now that's just tempting me to make one.
If a bird shits on a cross, is that religious hate?
Come on. With all the real problems in this city this is just background noise.
fecal matter matters, xenu.
heh. yeah.
