Tales of PR Inanity: Newsom Rides a Jet

spotlight%20newsom.jpg

Over 2008 we've been increasingly flummoxed to see Mayor Gavin Newsom and Jennifer Siebel resign themselves to personality, rather than awe-inspiring politician or actress of note, respectively. And press releases like the following, which we received this afternoon in the SFist inbox, don't help.

SAN FRANCISCO'S MAYOR GAVIN NEWSOM FLIES JET AIRWAYS

Jet Airways

San Francisco - November 10, 2008: San Francisco's Mayor Gavin Newsom and wife Jennifer are greeted by Zainul Aljunied, Jet Airways' Vice President-Western USA, before boarding a Jet Airways flight to Shanghai.

Mayor Newsom was flying Jet Airways' new Boeing 777-300 ER on his non-stop, transpacific journey.

About Jet Airways

Stuff like this can't be good for anyone.

And while we're on the subject, that "Love, Actually" spread of the Newsom-Siebel wedding was 1325545624 kinds of befuddling. Mind you, that's not an insult to the estimable Catherine Bigelow or 7x7 Magazine -- who did a fine job covering what looked like a lavish and envious set of nuptials -- but to whomever is in charge of the Newsomian PR machine. "Inaccessible" doesn't begin to describe this kind of publicity.

Jet Airways has delicious veg and non-veg curry for lunch and Bollywood on the video on demand screens. They made an excellent choice.

Looks like a flak release from Jet Airways, not the Mayor's Office, nO?

i'm aware that it's not from the mayor's office. but i can't image any resistance from them to the initial example.

I loathe Gavin Newsom and his idiot bride. Everything bad in the universe is their fault times 10.

they're fine people. but they could be better.

Not to get off on a rant here....but god, American Airlines have slumped to new depths of just-plain-not-giving-a-crap-anymoreness. Not only do they make it totally obvious that every single member of their organization has a pathological hatred of passengers, I just paid $2500 for a coach ticket that included the joys of mechanical failure, lost luggage, inedible food, and a large CRT monitor above the middle row showing a bunch of commercials for AA. All the flight attendants are angry middle-aged heffers from Deluth or crackly-faced, odd-smelling queens and are just the biggest collection of bitter losers ever assembled. Fuck you, fuck your management and fuck me if I ever fly on your third-world attempt at an airline. Just crash, burn and leave the skies open to Indian billionaires who seem to know what they're doing.

Flying Virgin America for my trip to NYC this weekend .... love 'em!

@fizzandpop: bad news, the Indian billionaires cant seem to build a website that could tell me how much a flight from SFO to LHR would cost me.

You are right on, Brock. I added to your distaste and wrote my own post about this news release. Enjoy! http://www.spinsucks.com/public-relations/a-letter-to-jet-airways
